“sleep within the forest”
Reviewed November 15, 2013

we stayed one night while visiting this attraction. a hostel style lodge, clean, has everything you need. hot water. bring your own food. tea, coffee and milk provided. toasty fireplace. but the mattress was pretty bad - covered in plastic making for a very noisy and restless sleep. Other than the mattress, for what the facility is, it was perfect.

This lodge was only built two years ago, and is in beautiful condition. Three of us here tonight - one couple plus a US traveller. We had the double room 3, compact but fresh and usable. Would be very crowded if many more of the rooms were utilised, but my impression from other reviews is that they infrequently are. We stayed on a Friday night.

The kitchen is well equipped with crockery, cutlery, fridge space and tables for sitting - but not enough seating for if the place was fully booked, which would become very crowded.

Service was great, welcoming and helpful. Fire was set ready to be lit. Some electric heating also available.

No telephone reception, but wifi hotspot (unsecured) available and usable.

We came on a TasDeals deal - $99 for the double, food (steak etc) for dinner and breakfast, hang gliding (2ea) and entrance fees, so awesome value is available if you look for it.

Room Tip: Room 3 is the double. Others are bunk rooms. Room 2 is not off the main kitchen area and opens direc...

Thanks for your comments, we're glad you enjoyed staying in the Lodge, and found the TasDeals offer good value. Room 8 is also a double. We aim to offer a variety of room types to cater for a range of budgets. Rooms 1 and 2 are our bunk rooms opening to the outside, and are $30 per bed. Each room sleeps up to four people. We look forward to welcoming you again soon!

This lodge provides an opportunity to visit the airwalk and other walks in the area after the crowds have left. We really enjoyed being alone on the airwalk. There were torches provided for us however we didn't see much wildlife after dark, only a few wallabys.

It is definitely hostel style, with the rooms very small. The four bed/bunk rooms are small with limited space for luggage, and they are accessed from outside. The remaining rooms are accessed from the kitchen/living area and are slightly larger. On a cool evening there was considerable condensation with four in the one room. However if your are expecting backpacker/ hostel accomodation this is very good. Everything was clean and comfortable with the kitchen fully equipped. There is a wood heater, wood provided, if it is cold.

We were the only people there, however there was only seating at the tables for 13 so if full it would be very cosy.

Overall it was as we expected and we had an enjoyable night.

We love staying in the midst of someplace so we can be there before and after the crowds arrive. The construction of accommodations at the Tahune Airwalk in 2011 created this opportunity for us on our visit to Tasmania in February. However, be aware this is not a lodge in any sense of the word. The literature describes it as 8 bedrooms in 3 wings with a central kitchen and shared baths. No wings. It is 8 bedrooms that open directly onto the kitchen area, which is new and big and terrific. 2 refrigerators, 2 stovetops. Lots of kitchen tables and chairs. No sofas or other seating to hang out (and none in the rooms). Internet access and DVD player. No TV reception. There are 3 bathrooms (men, women, and disabled). There is a capacity of about 26 people, because most of the rooms are dormitory style. We booked the only double. This amounted to a queen size bed, pushed against a wall (so you could only get out on one side), 2 hooks and 4 cubbyholes, with window. More of a bed cupboard. The door is a pocket door that does not seal at the bottom, so if there were a lot of people, it would be very noisy. Everything is new. Bed was comfortable. No one else was there, so we had the place to ourselves on a Friday night. Cool. The set up would be perfect for a family. But if there were a lot of people, it would be crazy and loud. Plus, there are very few amenities. One towel per person. No shampoo. Bathrooms are large. Toilets are in separate rooms. Good news is you can check which rooms have been reserved by going on wotif.com. They have rates for the Airwalk Lodge and show what is available by night. Other good news. It is very reasonable. Our double was $80. $30 per person in the four bunk rooms. $90 per room for the family and triple rooms. Obviously, you can bring your own food, and if you are going to stay for more than one night, you should. We enjoyed the food at the cafe for dinner (which closes at 5 p.m., so we got take out), as long as you stick to the fresh and not fried dishes. The best news is that you get to go to sleep in the middle of the forest without actually camping. (There are campsites available). We got up early and went back on the Airwalk at about 7 a.m., and there were lots of birds chirping, and the sun rising over the mountains, reflecting changing lights on the trees and the river. When you arrive, you get your key at the Airwalk ticket office and turn it in at the same place. Each room does have its own lock. Another benefit of staying here is that you get a reduced rate on entrance to the Airwalk. Usual rate is about $25 per person, and with your accommodation, entrance is $10. Not that anyone ever checked our ticket. Lots of good reasons to stay overnight and enjoy the many walks and hikes at different times of the day, and it is a drag to have to drive in from Geeveston, when you can walk in from your room. For us, it turned out great. If there were only a few people, think it would still be fun.
