We were extremely impressed with Edge of the Bay Resort from the moment we arrived. The lady in reception was so helpful and provided us with handy hints on what to see and do in Coles Bay and its surrounds. Nothing was too much trouble, from suggesting restaurants (not many due to it being winter), booking into attractions and providing maps and drawings on how to get to certain places in the surrounding areas. We had an awesome room overlooking the bay which uninterrupted views from our deck. There is an abundance of wildlife which are quite tame and add the the beautiful nature of the resort. Rooms are clean with some cooking facilities (toaster, kettle, etc). We were most impressed and will recommend Edge of the Bay Resort to all of our friends and family.

We picked this resort based totally on it's location, and from that point of view it didn't disappoint. Nestled in the bush with stunning views towards the Hazzards it would be difficult to find anywhere else that you could be that close to nature. The beach was a short 2 minute walk from our cabin, and many times we seemed to be the only people there.

We were privileged to be visited by the local wallabies for breakfast, and again while barbecuing dinner. There were numerous birds to watch and wallabies hopped through the local flora.

The resort has the choice of unit accommodation and self contained cabins. We chose the cabins so we could cook. As well as a fully fitted out kitchen there was a BBQ on the deck. Wood was supposed to be provided, but wasn't. After asking we were directed to a woodpile at the end of the road. Unfortunately no-one had bothered to cut it to useable lengths, so we had to search for pieces that would fit in the BBQ. We then had to return to reception to get matches, as these were also not provided.

The interior of the cabin resembled a Swedish sauna. There was timber everywhere. Thankfully there were many windows with breathtaking views across the bay to distract us from the rather dated interior. Nonetheless, it was well fitted out with a laundry in the bathroom; and a line hidden around the back of the cabin for drying. The 2nd bedroom had bunk style beds and smelled somewhat musty. So although it was clean I felt it needed a good airing.

Included in the price was the use of the tennis court (if you happened to take tennis shoes with you), bikes and small dinghies to row around the bay.

The cottages were well situated in the bush so you were not aware of your neighbours although they weren't actually very far away. Parking was provided in front of the cottage.

We didn't sample the restaurant food as we preferred to cook our own. Not far down the road is the Freycinet Marine Farm where you can buy fresh seafood to cook. Or if you prefer they will cook for you.

Not all water from the taps is drinkable. There are clear labels and notes regarding the water so it's not a big issue, however we used bottled water to save confusion.

Overall it was a brilliant location to stay, but I felt I little more attention to detail would have made our stay just that much better. It was good for the price, but I feel the cabins are well overdue for a makeover.

Room Tip: The units are much more modern and contemporary than the cabins.

The standout feature of this property is the location and the view. With views spanning the famous Hazards and Freycinet national park it is a definite quality option. The rooms were decent, without being impressive, and the restaurant served quality food. Staff were very helpful.

We stayed at The Edge of the Bay Resort at a friend's recommendation and we were not disappointed. The staff were incredibly helpful and professional. The food was AMAZING and the view...we couldn't get enough of it. I could wake up to that view every day. It's in a great location - very close to the national park and Coles Bay itself. I'm a keen photographer and the best photos of our whole trip to Tassie were taken from our private deck. Great value for money and a brilliant find!

Room Tip: Get a beach front room - it's worth it!

My husband and I recently spent 3 nights here and wish we had booked for longer, the accommodation is great and the views spectacular. We had the most amazing views from our bed and as this was our first trip to Tassie we will certainly be returning. An absolute must is a meal in the restaurant, the food was delicious.

The location of this resort is impressive.
Sure Freycinet lodge may be closer to the actual national park, but all you do is look out at the bay. Edge of the Bay looks across the bay towards the Hazards. The views are spectacular. Native fauna wanders around your back garden. You can walk off your back balcony to Coles Beach. You can then walk along the beach to the township of Coles Bay in about 30 minutes if you do it at a fast pace.

The rooms are clean well presented and well designed to capture their impressive views.
There is reverse cycle air conditioning (I only used the heating).
The beds are only queen sized but comfortable.
The bathroom has separate heating and tends a bit to the cooler side but is clean and functional.

Bikes, tennis courts and dinghies are all offered for free.
The weather was too cold to contemplate the dinghy.

The weak point is that the only meal offered in the associated restaurant is dinner. If you want a hot breakfast or lunch you have to travel 10 minutes drive down the road (to Coles Bay is the closest).

It is all about the natural environment though. If you're not there to enjoy that, there's not much else.

We visited Tasmania as part of my family's celebration for my mother's 90th.
On the way we had a couple of nights to ourselves and drove down from Launceston to Freycinet for a couple of nights at Edge of the Bay Retreat.
We paid $218.00 a night which included a $30 credit to the cost of our dinner. I thought very good value.
The only criticisms were from my wife the heating which came from the usual wall mounted heater but which did not spread warmth evenly or effectively and from both of us the bed which was a queen not a king. At 194cms I prefer a king.
On the plus side the unit/suite was a good size, well appointed and very comfortable. The view ( as almost anywhere in Coles Bay ) is magnificent. The night sky is stunning. The setting amongst the bush ( and next to Saffire ) is beautiful. Nils and Stefanie, a German couple were on duty during our stay and were helpful and a delight to interact with. The food in the restaurant was delicious. My wife had a filet of beef both nights. Perfectly cooked as were the vegetables. I had a braised beef special one night and fish the next. Again perfect. As was entree and desert. The chef is apparently from Hobart and is doing a great job.
Freycinet is of course the destination to visit and is spectacular. Get to Wine Glass Bay. A good walk and well worth it.
And for coffee in Coles Bay there is a very good cafe Tombolo which you should try.
