“Serves a purpose for Ferry passengers”
Reviewed August 2, 2007

Motel/Hotel conveniently located near the Devonport to Melbourne ferry terminus. (2 min drive)
Average room with TV, bar fridge, shower and toilet.
Would look elsewhere if I was going to stay in Devonport for a few days etc but as stopover accomodation serves its purpose.
Is a reasonably cheap price and has its own restaraunt and bar.

I checked out the one review before booking, however as I was arriving on The Spirit of Tasmania ferry one morning and leaving the next night, I thought I'd stay as close as possible to the terminal. The terminal is actually about 4 blocks away, a bit of a haul if you're walking with luggage.

Edgewater is a motel, and does not look like the pictures on the site, however the staff is friendly. I was a woman (of color) staying there by myself and didn't have any problems however I could smell smoke from those smoking outside, and could hear some voices in the evening from those around talking. Not very loud, and not very late.

The room was quite clean, with a nice heating pad, plenty of blankets, towels & tea biscuits.

Next time I would stay on the other side of the River, however crossing was easy as the ferry is right next to the hotel and only cost $2.50 each way.

BTW If you're going to walk around the area, be sure to go across the other side and stop at the visitors center, they were very helpful. The walk down the path to the Devonport train (tourist, scenic train) is very long, and I wouldn't recommend doing it alone, as there are a lot of isolated spots (found out the hard way) however I can't say that anyone bothered me, and all is all, Tasmania is a great place. If you can, go when the Targa race is going on, and check out the action. What fun!

  • Liked — Super close to the ferry.
  • Disliked — Location, the fact that is was a motel, and the pictures on the site do not represent it.

I have stayed at the edgewater in Devenport every year for the past 8 years. It is an older motel, but with renovations to old rooms a few years ago, they are nicely updated. I have always had a riverview king room, thay are just like a normal hotel room, nothing flash, but better than basic and a great size. I had a courtyard room once and it was very small, (good for overnight, but thats it), so I asked to be upgraded to a king and this was done with no hesitation for a minimul fee. I have not stayed in the terraces, but as they are only a few years old, I'd say they would be pretty good. I would definatley recommend this hotel and will keep coming back.

We thought we would treat ourselves because we were going to have a long day driving and thought Devonport was a major centre given the Spirt of Tasmania docks there, so we booked into what looked like an up market Waterfront King room at one of their 3 star accommodations. On Wotif we found the Edgewater. I also looked at their own website. Do not believe the pictures they show on the website or on Wotif of the rooms.

It is located very near the Ferry Terminal, waterfront - yes of the terminal and all of the freight ships and the Spirit of Tasmania coming up the river with the road leading to them in front of the room. It is part of the Innkeepers Collection group. It is a pub with these small rooms around a parking courtyard. From the lighting of their photos the room and the complex look much more upmarket then what they are. You book in just outside the public bar and the pokies, with meal ordered (eg. Beef Burgers) at the public bar.

It was very old fashioned and the bathroom you see in all of their publicity shots bares no resemblance to the 1960s bathroom with the small blue tiles that was in our room.

Sorry - would not recommend it or Devonport itself. The Kit Kat Cafe that Lonely Planet recommends too is really an old style fish and chip and burgertshop again out of the 60s - very fatty and smothered in BBQ sauce.

Only a few minutes out of town on the way out the next day we saw Ulverstone and Penguin - both exceptionally pretty places with nice accommodation (that we could see from the road) and the views of the coast were superb. If only we had driven for another 10-15 minutes!!!
