We travel fairly regularly on The Spirit of Tasmania and are always keen to book a table. The menu is a fixed price for two or three courses and unless you're really hungry it's good to share an entree and dessert thereby only paying for two courses.
The steak is great, cooked exactly to order, in our case warm blue. It was melt in your mouth tender and flavoursome. The duck Asian salad was a nice ballad with the Asian flavours cutting the richness of the duck - of which there was plenty.
Staff are always very helpful and generally knowledgable about your destination.
Ask for a table inside the restaurant - there are table in the aisle which aren't very private.

There was a time when you had to get on board early to achieve a booking at the restaurant. That's changed, and the empty tables are sending a message loud and clear...something has to go. When I asked the head waitress why the restaurant was so quiet, she replied that "in fact they were very busy, she likes to spread out the bookings to make sure her staff weren't stressed " This must be the reason why the staff have so much time to chat together in groups! The menu is very small and doesn't have any flexibility. I had to pay $56 for 2 starters. (it's really not unusual for women to prefer smaller portions). Have to say the stuffed zucchini flowers were delicious. The calamari salad was just ok, my husband's salmon was a disgrace, completely bland. The alternative to the restaurant is fast food which isn't acceptable to many people. Surely they should cut out the pretentiousness and give the passengers some honest, fresh and simple Tasmanian meals. They have the opportunity to use the best meat, fish, fruit and vegetables right on their doorstep, for goodness sake it's an opportunity to showcase what Tassie is known for - please make some changes. I'll be returning soon but I will not be booking the Leatherwood - I'll take my own food.

The Leatherwood Restaurant aboard the ‘Spirit of Tasmania II’ from Devonport (Tasmania) to Melbourne (Victoria), an overnight service, boarding at 1800 and arriving 0630. Splendid de-luxe cabin, looking out for’ard, and not wickedly expensive, given that air is the only competition. Dinner from 1900 to 2100, I selected 2000. A wonderful Tasmanian steak, beautifully cooked and accompanied, followed by very tasty local cheeses. The ship makes a virtue of Tasmanian produce in its restaurant. So washed down by some excellent local Cabernet Sauvignon. For a ferry, commendable service and food. If only one of the waitresses had not spent so much of her time joshing with a number of local, familiar and rather boozy passengers, the service and billing might have been a great deal quicker. But this is Australia – so pokies aboard, too. A remarkably good experience, and recommended.
