Owner description: This fascinating National Trust property was home to Prime Minister Joseph Lyons and Dame Enid Lyons together with their 12 children. Built by them in 1916 Home Hill was the heart of the family's life and contains a rich collection of personal material. A guided tour of the property provides an unexpected insight into Australian political life during the momentous events of the mid twentieth century. Public access is by guided tour only at 2pm, Wed to Sun. Also available for group or private bookings/afternoon teas etc. Closed during July and August.

Our guide Ruth was unhurried and very interesting. Stopped on our way to the Spirit to head back home. What a pleasant afternoon after a wonderful 10 days in beautiful Tasmania.

Home Hill is a beautiful historic home, the former residence of Prime Minister Joseph Lyons and his wife Enid. The house is magnificently maintained with original furniture and items belonging to the couple. The guides are friendly and well informed and a tour gives a brilliant insight into the life of Tasmania's most influential couple.

Brilliant for history buffs or anyone interested in sparing an hour to learn about two of Tassie's most important people, there are even some ceremonial robes that wouldn't look out of place in a Harry Potter novel, a highlight for the children.

Definitely worth checking out and we are grateful of the recommendation from a friend who had visited earlier and spoke so highly of it we had to go and check it out for ourselves!

We visited Home Hill, a National Trust property once the home of Joseph Lyons (Premier of Tasmania and later Prime Minister of Austrlia ) and his wife Enid. The property is only open for a tour at 2pm (our guide book was not up to date and we did not realise this) so were fortunate that we arrived about 2.15pm and the guide kindly added us into the tour and then spent time afterwards to go over what we had missed. The house was built in 1916 but added to over the years. Dame Enid left the to the National Trust and had ensured that everything was laid out as she wanted it. Apparently she did most of the wallpapering and odd jobs, even cutting down one of the fireplace surrounds to make into a bed head. We had a lovely informative guide who bought the house to life and made for a very enjoyable visit.

I love historic homes and this was very nice. It was a nice way to spend and hour or so looking around a home that was lived in by a prime minister at one time with his family
