We found the chateau very comfortable and the staff friendly and happy to help with any query. Grey Gum restaurant a la carte menu very interesting and some meals very well done but some not quite hitting the heights of one's expectations for this level of restaurant.

Room Tip: Split level King spa rooms with view of boardwalk good choice

Cradle Mountain is a National Park, so there is limited accommodation on the mountain, and I suppose it has to blend in with it's surroundings. The reception area is large and friendly with a log fire- needed even in Summer- it can be 20 degrees colder than in the east. The rooms are large clean and comfortable, but more middle range than chateau-like and rather old fashioned in décor. Shower room clean and functional- not luxurious. Great place to stay for access to Cradle Mountain walks.
What I would recommend is the Gum Tree ? restaurant- in the hotel. Most guests seem to use the buffet style restaurant which would suit families. However, for couples or a treat, the A la carte restaurant was beautiful. Food was well presented, delicious and with good choice. The waitress recommended a great wine and then called us as the sun set so we could take some amazing photographs. Truly lovely.

Room Tip: I think all the rooms overlook the bush. We were at the end of the corridor, so was nice and quiet.

This is quite a large hotel which provides great comfort in the pristine wilderness of Cradle Mountain Park. The hotel is well-appointed with excellent restaurant/cafes and the staff were very helpful. My only negative was the TV screen in our room, an older style encased in a cupboard which made it difficult to watch other that directly in front of it. However one does not visit this area to watch TV and the National Park surroundings rate to my mind as one of Australia's premiere attractions and are quite breathtaking. The Chateau is a great base to enjoy the wilderness surrounds.

Room Tip: Northern side looks out on bushland.

Having a room overlooking the northern side of the bushland out on to the silence of the wilderness is truly relaxing. By later evening when the the has set, 9 ish in mid summer! the Paddemelon wallabies are out to forage and the animals of the bush are stirring. Rooms are modern, spacious and quite adequate.

Small verandahs and large picture windows are great for quiet observation up close.
Meals in the Grey Gum restaurant were not cheap but consistent with better meals in Tasmania, all more expensive than Sydney. However, we ate very well on local lamb, seafood and rabbit, well presented and with excellent service by Zack. Dessert was a excellent macadamia toffee cheesecake.
We were there during an unusual hot spell of 31+ but fortunately we walked Dove Lake early and were able to park right there.
Hot on our return, Zack came to our rescue by meeting our request for iced coffee, not a common request here in the land of cold and wet climes.
A good value option in this area.

Room Tip: Choose a room on the northern side for best views of the bush life.

Stay for 2 nights, accommodation is comfortable, but you can only have a very hot shower or an extremely cold one! Besides the walking trails in the national park, not much more to do. The Wilderness Gallery and Tasmanian Tiger exhibition is enjoyable. Very peaceful location. Staff friendly.

We had a speedy check-in and it wasn't long before we were in the room and enjoying the surroundings. The Split Level King Spa room overlooked the surrounding park and didn't overlook other rooms or guests. The rooms were clean and very comfortable. You are not far from the start of many walks around Cradle Mountain N.P. The breakfast was a standard buffet but the food was hearty and gets you prepared for a day of walking.

When we arrived the hotel looked great, with wood fires on and with a great atmosphere. However, I could not sleep for the two nights that we were there as the beds were prehistoric and incredibly hard and uncomfortable. The bed spreads were also prehistoric and the blankets made the whole family itch consistently through the night. The fridge was extremely loud so I had to turn it off at night and the walls were so thin that each night we heard the people next door talking and snoring and you could hear people walking down the hallways also.

The service at the Grey Gum was mediocre and prices quite high. Overall, I think for the price you are paying you can do a lot better nearby and I couldn't wait to leave and get some sleep. Do yourself a favour and look elsewhere as this place is old and tired.
