“Bliss in the wilderness”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 4, 2009

What a magical place. We only had one night there, which was not nearly long enough - we plan to return and stay at least 3-4 nights. Lovely cabins (note no TV or internet or mobile reception - this is a place to go to unplug!!); plenty of wildlife around; breathtaking scenery. We had a fabulous meal at the Highland Restaurant and also enjoyed relaxing in front of the open fire with a glass of wine in the Guests Lounge. I didn't get to visit the day spa but the treatments looked divine, I will be sure to get more time there next time!

Tip: be prepared for all types of weather. Bring a good coat and some good enclosed shoes, as some cabins are a good 5 minute walk to the main lodge (for restaurants etc) and it's chilly on the way back from dinner!

we never expected what we got. this superbly beautiful complex of wooden chalets, each with own fireplace and wooden verandah, left nothing to be desired. rooms look brand new, are spacious with extra large daybed and a super modern bathroom. that hot water bath was appreciated every night. then the setting - hard to match. you walk out of your chalet and choose between a nature trail through thick, mossy rain forest complete with highly picturesque waterfall or alpine pastures and rocky climbs. The staff were incredibly helpful in finding things to do, the lodge itself organizes many special activities rain or shine. the staff are very personal and engaging and apart from a fine dining room near reception there is a wonderful log cabin like restaurant with great views and large central fireplace, which made us feel like in an Austrian alpine ski resort. Very warm, very friendly and great food!
There are so many walks right on your doorstep, maps can be bought at reception, that we decided to make this our base, enjoy the great food and accommodation and trek during the day. We will most definitely be back!

Misguided by this hotel's reputation, we headed straight to this lodge, passing other enticing accommodation opportunities. After a taxing walk up to Marion's Peak, we looked forward to an excellent meal, a hot shower and a good night's sleep. Alas this was not the case, the restaurant was booked out, the shower flooded the bathroom and anything left on the bathroom floor due to only one hook being available to hang clothes was soaked, and sadly the bed was so old, soft and lumpy, it was impossible for even tired bodies to get a good night's sleep. Never again!

Whoever built this hotel did a beautiful job, but whoever runs it today ought to feel ashamed. The King Billy suite wais spacious, with a nice deck and spa. The restaurant serves mediocre food at best, with terrible service (how about waiting 15 minutes for a beer). Rooms are cleaned late and poorly. The flies we killed on arrival were on the floor two days later. The carafe of cheap port was sticky – I wrapped some toilet paper to be able to grasp it – it was still there when we checked out. Advice – if you stay here, avoid the restaurant. Bring your own food and wine and have a peaceful grand time in and around your suite. For a restaurant you can also drive 5 minutes to the nearby Cradle Mountain Chateau. Internet – this place has one paid terminal for the entire resort, no wifi.
We had a gorgeous suite at the Lodge but service was bad, cold, and indifferent. In contrast, we felt a very warm reception when we drove to the nearby Cradle Mountain Chateau. The only reason to stay at the Lodge would be the gorgeous suite (we paid $660 per night). In every other respect the Chateau ws much warmer, friendlier, with faster service and much more modern.

After months and months of researching reviews, our honeymoon to the land down under could not have been better! Our first stop was the Cradle Mountain Lodge. The first impression of our Spa Suite wasn't all that great (only because we didn't know the "cabin" was attached to another cabin), but no worries! I assume that since they knew we were on our honeymoon, they never booked anyone in the conjoining cabin. The back of our cabin butted up to a hill in the forest which called for lots of roaming wildlife. We saw lots of pademelons in our back yard. Some were even carrying their babies in their pouches (Oct. is spring time in AU). We also saw posseums every night. These possums are not like the ones we have in the US. These little guys are adoreable! We also saw a LOT of wombats all over the place. They are so used to humans you can almost touch them, which calls for some really nice photos. We also came across a playtypus family in the creek on the Enchanted Stroll walk which is one of the walks offered by the Lodge, no park pass required. There is also a Tasmanian Devil Sanctuary just up the street from the lodge. On a not so crowded day, you can get up close and personal with one! As for the food, we didn't care much for the main dining area, but did okay with the bar food. On our 4th day at the Lodge, I commented on how soft my hair was, only to find out that the Lodge is tapped into an underground natural spring, so I was basically washing my hair with natural spring water every day - UNREAL. Even my skin felt softer. We hiked the Cradle Mountain Summit one day and actually walked through snow on the hike. Just an amazing adventure all around. All in all, in the end, we had no complaints about this place. The homemade cookies and canapes in our room every night when we returned home for dinner was ideal. The music playing with the lights dimmed and the bed turned down only meant we had one more thing to do. (haha) I HIGHLY reccommend the Lodge to anyone who is in the area. It is a beautiful drive from the airport. We even stopped by the Honey Farm in Chudleigh on the way home. This is a trip we will never forget and I can assure that anyone who loves wildlife and hiking the way we do will not be disappointed!

Very nice log cabins in a picturesque and quiet place. The walks around the lodge are excellent. Have read in a few reviews here that the rooms are somewhat aged and dated, which is true, but there is no where else you would choose to stay if coming to Cradle Mountain.

We came with our baby and were a bit worried when we saw the restaurant, which is quite posh and expensive and not the kind of place you would be comfortable with a food-thrower! But then we discovered the tavern-style restaurant, which was more casual and reasonably priced. The food there was quite good, came quickly, and was filled with families with young kids. It was exactly what we hoped for.

We will definitely return when our baby is older and we can do more of the walks.

NB: This is TV free place!

We stayed in Aug 08 for 5 nights in a spa cabin.

We had previously stayed at this resort and were "Blown Away" by everything! This time it had dramatically gone down in our expectations.

The rooms have been downgraded and no where near as FLASHY as before - certainly not what I call 5 star, but a nice 4 star would probably be accurate.

The staff at the resort are very friendly and helpful, especially the bar staff who regularly remembered our drink order and started pouring before we even got the the bar :-)

The food in the Bistro is great and well priced for what it is, but the main restaurant is very expensive and very small portions. My fiance ordered a rack of lamb and got one cutlet, that is NOT a rack in my books.

Buffet breakfast here is fabulous! Don't miss out on that.

The sanctuary spa is just out of this world! If you have the opportunity to experience the sanctuary, don't hesitate, but book before you arrive as they are VERY busy and you could miss out!

All in all not a bad holiday, but we were disappointed with the standard of the rooms this time around.
