I had this package deal at Peppers which includes an upgraded view room, a ticket to the Tasmanian devil refuge including tour and touching (!). I enjoy these mountain lodges and was not disappointed. My room was extremely comfortable with sitting area, and large comfy bed plus one twin bed, and fireplace, which was needed. The bathrooms are spare but clean, and very cold in the morning. Parking is next to or near your unit. On the walks to and from the main lodge you will find a variety of wildlife, and within a short walk, more. I enjoyed the food in the lodge, but I mainly kept to the pub side of things. This is the mountain lodge experience (with its devotees) so if that is not what you want, go elsewhere. Peppers is right outside the park entrance so you cannot stay any closer in. My rate was 322 AUS per night.

Room Tip: There are cabins, lodge rooms, and some motel type rooms, so I think there is a range of comfort and...

The best thing about the Lodge is the roaming wildlife! We saw wild wallabies and wombats right next to the lodge areas. There are also short walking tracks from the Lodge areas, where we saw wombat holes and more wallabies. There's also a convenience-type store on site which is great.

Service - when we checked in, the staff were super friendly and helpful. They gave us a brochure of the walks in Cradle Mt, prebooked our night feeding tour at Devils@Cradle for us over the phone to guarantee our spots, and gave us some informative advice about our timing plans for the tour and dinner.

Rooms - we originally booked the Pencil Pine, but for slightly more, you might as well get the Contemporary Spa Cabin. We upgraded on arrival and it was well worth it! The Spa Cabin has a 2 person spa tub (plus shower), which was great after a long cold day of walking. The room is quite spacious with high ceilings. The gas fireplace was cool, but took ages to warm the place up because of the high ceilings. The room was relatively clean, although the single bed/sofa in the corner had a slight stain mark on it and there was a fluff of carpet that had been ripped out.

Restaurant - we ate dinner at the Highland restaurant and that was lovely fine dining food! I was really impressed. At $70 for 3 course, it's a splurge but we felt it was worth it because of the fantastic table service, complimentary bread and the fact that all the food is sourced locally and the menu provides info about where they get their food etc. The room booking also includes free buffet breakfast which was quite good quality.

Room Tip: We originally booked Pencil Pine but then upgraded to a Contemporary Spa Cabin - worth it for a hot...

We finally got to visit this hotel and it was a disappointment.
The hotel is expensive and it does not deliver.
The rooms are outdated and poorly designed. There is no TV in the room (don't have a problem with this) but neither the chairs or the bed faces the window (and there is nothing to look at in the room).
The lighting is weak which makes it difficult to read in the room. so you can't watch TV, and you cant read and you can't enjoy the view.....
The bathrooms are sub-standard : for me it was like being in a hostel. Cheap tiles, cheap fittings and the towels were frayed, threadbare and well passed their use-by date.
In the main lodge - there a smart dining room - very expensive and during our stay it was fully booked. you would expect they have the capacity to cater for all their guests considering what they charge for the privilege of staying there.
The other restaurant is styled around a Swiss/Austrian ski-lodge but it just lacks style. The food is drab, uncreative, poorly prepared and again expensive for war they serve up.
I left with the hotel with the distinct impression that the operators were out to fleece the client for every dollar possible.
2 examples : there is no room WIFI (this is a basic service today for the global traveller) and the WIFI in the lodge area is available on pad-for basis only. In addition, they have an ancient PC that can be used but again, there is a fee attached.
When it comes to check-out, there is a grubby sign on the desk advising that credit card payment is subject to a 2% fee. Considering that the rates for staying there are high, these there add-ons left me annoyed and I encourage would-be visitors to do their research before parting with their cash. This hotel needs a serious attitude adjustment.

There are 2 positives.
The staff were friendly and obliging.
The hotel is located adjacent to the Craddle Mountain National Park and this Park is a must-see.

Stayed in the Pencil Pine Cabin. Very well appointed and warm. Even though had only a gas (wood look) fire, very warm and inviting. Great view out of bedroom onto the wood behind the cabin. Very private space. The lounge and bar area in the main Lodge were particularly warm and inviting with great open fires creating a lovely ambience! Buffet breakfast would have to be one of the best we've had (and we have travelled extensively). Staff were lovely and always had the time to answer any questions. The enchanted walk and the King Billy walk are a must to do while visiting. They have been designed extremely well. Of course the walk in the National Park is also a must. The walk up to the Twisted Lakes and just below the summit was brilliant and challenging but well worth the effort. Would highly recommend staying at Peppers and visiting a beautiful part of the world.

Room Tip: A bath would be handy in the cooler months of the year and especially after a big walk. Only showers...

Maybe my expectations have changed over the years
Maybe I have just got used to higher end accommodation providing more with their rate
Probably my memory of my last stay at a better time of year influenced me to book this place
We have stayed here 3-4 times over the years.
This time booked through motif on a monday night for $200 for the pencil pine cabin. There is a local rate for Tasmanian residents which was about $140 at the time. Standard price was significantly more - I think $420 or $450.
Previously have stayed in the spa cabin
Stayed in cradle mountain lodge for a night with my son. Room cabin fine nothing spectacular but admittedly above standard. Good size, good heating but controller not completely intuitive to use, bed comfortable.
Lodge bistro fine but nothing spectacular either. But simpler than a la carte restaurant with small child.
Service not great but standard.
Used to having wifi included nowadays but not at cradle mountain where it costs $5.50 per hour for example
By the way Telstra is the only network that works on the mountain - I had Optus - am not sure if that was just mobile, or data also
Late checkout is not offered complimetarily if available unlike other places we stay but is offered at $25 per hour although Emma at reception offered $12.50 per hour if you ask after the managers have closed up for the evening. We thought we'd take a walk in the morning then come back but decided we didn't really need to come back.
Probably a little disappointed although in reality the standard probably hasn't changed just my expectations
If you want it to be the same as it was before, this is fine. If you are looking for a place that you return to to change a little or offer more then maybe not here. We were planning to book here in a few months time but might explore other options nearby for that different experience

My husband and I stayed in a spa and log fire cabin, we had such a perfect time, we wish we'd booked to stay at least two nights. There are an array of walks to do from here as a base but also the lodge provides activities too. The romance of the log fires in the main building and eating areas, piano ( if you can play) board games, books to read on the leather lounges, it's very yesteryear and oh so relaxing. We loved having the log fire. Also a very comfortable bed. The only thing I can fault and someting that i find surprising is that they don't serve any of the Tasmanian local boutique apple ciders, among a nice choice of wines. (They sell Willie Smiths cider at the boutique shop which is quite separate to the hotel facilities and is meant for take away for consumption later. not sold cold) disappointingly willie smiths and Spreyton are not available at the bistro bar nor in the main dining to enjoy with your meal. We will be back again and next time for longer.
