“Great balance between comfort and nature”
Reviewed April 26, 2014

We stayed 2 nights in Spa suite. The cabin was spacious and cozy. It has log fire and 2 people can easily soak in the spa tube while looking out to the wilderness. The view from the cabin was great and we could enjoy the view from our comfy bed. Our spa suite was at the back so there was no privacy issue or noise from other guests.

When we were there, the weather was not great and rain a lot, so we ended up just relaxing in the cabin. So, we were glad that we decided to splash a bit and stayed in nicer cabin.
We were spoiled with turn-down services, canapés delivered in the afternoon and port of wine to drink while watching the log fire burning. We really enjoyed the complementary guided walk too.

Very nice Pencil Pine cabin with log effect fire was a decent size and spotless. This isn' t a budget option, so it irks to have to pay for wi- fi. If Comfort Inns can include it why can't premium hotels like this one?
The buffet breakfast was fine( and included!)The Tavern is a 'pub' with good food at reasonable prices for the location.Local walks well worth doing, but Dove and Crater Lake and Marion's Lookout in the National Park next door are the places for spectacular treks and views.Take sturdy boots and water and enjoy!

Don't turn up when there is a cracking game of footy, as rooms aren't fitted with TVs.

Rooms are clean and tidy, staff on reception and cleaners are friendly.
Turn-down staff were outstanding - very helpful and friendly!

We stayed for 4 nights recently because of its excellent location and proximity to so many beautiful walks around Dove Lake and the surrounding area. The Lodge is not really luxury but comfortable and well maintained for such a remote area. The accommodation is a bit dated and we had to ring up to ask about turning down our combustion fire because there were no markings on the fireplace to indicate high and low for adjustment. The combustion heater was otherwise very cosy and added to the atmosphere in such a pretty bush setting.

Breakfast was excellent and the Highland restaurant was of a very good standard for dinner. The bistro which is cheaper has a great outlook. The food is very average but OK if you like a casual meal with chips. Once was enough for us.

Two evenings we were sent petit four dainty cakes as canapés and the other two nights cheese and biscuits. The petit fours were attractively presented but a little odd pre dinner with a drink!

There is a problem with WIFI. It needs to be modernised and workable for guests when charging these prices. It really should be included in the cost of the accommodation and available in the cabins/suites.

The Spa was very good but pricey and I didn’t like the pressure on me for extras in the treatment once I had started as well as to buy products and give a tip. This is not the usual practise in Australian Spas and it spoilt the experience. Otherwise a very pleasant place to stay in such a remote location.

Thank you for taking the time to write about your experience with us.

We are happy to hear you are impressed with the breakfast and dinner in Highland Restaurant and the nightly canapes delivered to your Spa Suite. A four night stay with us is ideal as you can truly experience both what our property has to offer and the surrounding National Park. My apologies regarding the wifi, we are however reliant on Telstra for this service.

We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back to Peppers Cradle Mountain Lodge again soon.

We booked a Suite with the jetted tub, and it was beautifully done, newly refurbished with lovely bed, woodburner and amazing service.
The outside of the cabins is the same as it has been for years, with the log cladding and looking very rustic, so I was slightly relieved to see the interiors have been modernised! Our room was just lovely with a really good little balcony at the back where we were constantly bombarded by cheeky wallabies and potaroos. The fire was made ready to light. The jetted tub was really nice. We were particularly impressed by the amenities and service. On both days of our stay we had complimentary petit fours either delivered to the door or put in the minibar fridge which was such a nice touch (not sure if standard or just for honeymooners!) The room was beautifully turned down every evening as well which we could have done without but made us feel special I suppose!
On check-in we were shown on the map how to get to our cabin which was right at the back, a couple of minutes walk from the lodge. The boardwalk path was well lit but once we were back on the road up towards our cottage the path lights ceased which made it a bit tricky after a late meal to get back.
We were very impressed with breakfast although they were always very busy, not many tables available for groups of 3 or more so timing is important.
We had an evening meal both at the tavern and at Highlanders Restaurant. The tavern meal was great, beer-battered fish and chips with an amazing James Squire cider on tap for me, and a Thai green curry for my husband. Both tasty, price reasonable considering you are at Cradle Mountain.
The Highlanders restaurant was lovely. 2 or 3 course meals available, and a degustation. We wanted the degustation however were immediately asked for our food choices for it. It is not what I would call a degustation; to choose multiple plates from anything on the normal menu to make up the 5 courses is not really what we were intending, we wanted the chefs specialities. So we changed our minds and went for a standard meal instead! Which was very nice, with a good wine list as well. Tasmanian unwooded chardonnay is my recommendation!
As well as visiting the national park I highly suggest you do the walks around the lodge. The King Billy track was very nice with unexpected views to Cradle Mountain (and not muddy at all as suggested on the guide) and the Waterfalls walk short but very pretty. The activities the lodge provides are very expensive and I suggest you get out your hiking boots instead, for the cost of the national park pass.

Had a lovely night at Peppers - could have stayed longer. Room was great, with wildlife around - wallabies outside window and evidence of wombats on the front porch in morning. Saw a wombat in driveway. Close to walks including the lovely Dove Lake walk. Breakfast included in price was great. Would recommend even though a little pricey. Loved the recreation room in the main house with it's wonderful fireplace and comfy leather lounges/chairs.

We stayed in a spa room which was cosy and comfortable. The fireplace added to the atmosphere and the spa was delightful after a hard day of walking. As the lodge is situated right at the gateway to the National Park, we could see Cradle Mountain in the morning mist as we walked around Dove Lake and then in sunshine in the afternoon. Relaxing in the lounge at the end of the day with a glass of wine and then having a choice of restaurant or pub food at reasonable prices was excellent. We even saw a wombat feeding as we walked to the pub one evening! I would thoroughly recommended Peppers Cradle Mountain Lodge to anyone visiting the area.

Room Tip: 'Go for the spa room!'
