Discovery Parks - Cradle Mountain

We stayed here for four days four hassle free and relaxing days. It's only a five minute drive from your cabin to cradle mountain and 2 minutes from devils@cradle which is a great place in its self. The only gripe I have is the bed was so uncomfortable.

We pre-booked a one night stay here, from the UK, many months before embarking on our Tasmania campervan trip, and what a lovely place it turned out to be. Very nice and secluded powered campervan site, and despite being 'full' our booking was all in place. Good facilities and very helpful and friendly staff. Very close to shuttle buses to Cradle Mountain. Wished we had more time at this site to stay longer.

I stayed in the hostel cabin for two nights and absolutely loved it. I came to Cradle Mountain for the nature, and the holiday park absolutely fit with the experience. It was fairly empty while I was there since it was the off season, so it was nice and peaceful around the area. I had an entire bunk room to myself as well, but I made friends with the few other people in the hall. The beds were really comfortable, each room has its own heater (which I put on full blast), there's a table in between the bunks, and the beds all have little reading lights next to them. The bathroom and kitchen were in separate cabins next door, and there was a larger common area with fireplaces down the path.

Reception has plenty of food and drinks for sale (a little pricey since you're so far from towns, so I'd suggest shopping before you go), and they'll let you use their computer for free for about a half hour, although the Internet is very slow. The visitor info center is only about a five minute walk from reception, and that has a shuttle to take you down to the parks. I really enjoyed it here, would recommend it to anyone!

Last time we stayed here you couldn't watch the tv as it just looked all snowy however they now have up graded all the televisions in the hotel to flat screens and the channels are better than anything I've ever watched in a hotel before. I'm not talking about Pay Tv rubbish, its Free To Air TV and clear as a bell which is amazing seeing they are in the middle of now where (National Park). It really makes a difference on a cold night when there's not much to do outside and keeps the kids entertained. Well done guys. Would recommend staying anytime, really close to all the action and they have a really well stocked shop at the reception.

This is our 2nd time staying this cosy cabins. 1st time was 2 years ago and we've decided to make a trip back to Cradle mountain because we missed it so much :) There is not much changes within this 2 years except for the price of the cabin has been increased. The interior and exterior of the cabin still well-maintained.

Well, we stayed for 2 nights in one of the cabin and it is just located within the national park and minutes away from the magnificent Cradle Mountain and the Dove lake.

The cabin is simple and have ample space for dining and separate bedrooms, with bunk beds, and some basic cooking facilities in the kitchen. The cabin which we stayed is clean and comfortable. The toilet and bathroom are located outside of the cabin which will be a bit inconvenient especially during the winter midnight. Its freezing cold and dark out there. As we spent most of our day outdoor, we have no issue with the cabin and it is just good for us to cook a simple dinner and to sleep at night.

If you are lucky, you may spot wombats or wallabies from the windows of the cabins, which we did! :) I would recommend this place for a budget traveler and want to take advantage of the convenience. It will be the best option there and it's the nearest accommodation to the national park. Nevertheless, if you are looking for a more comfy B&B or luxury type of accommodation, cosy cabins is definitely not a wise choice!

Room Tip: Look for the cabins which located nearer to the bathroom/toilet for your convenience.

We were pleased we chose this accommodation as it was more than sufficient for the two of us. It was spacious, clean, private and well equipped. The Cradle Mountain visitor centre is a short walk which is handy for catching the regular shuttles to Dove Lake. We definitely recommend this to other travellers.

The on-site store has a good range of food but we were glad we brought all of own supplies with us as this was a much cheaper option.

It is worth the money! The campground is well run, beautiful, and for what you get a very good price. We will certainly be back. Here is a summary of my stay:

Pro’s:
Location, location, location: beautiful area of course. But each campsite (we stayed in non-powered) was very private with brush on 2-3 sides separating one campsite from the next. This meant that when we sat out by our van we really couldn't see the campers next to us. It also made for a quiet night.
Customer Service: the front desk attendants were very friendly and quite knowledgeable about the Cradle Mountain area, hikes etc.
Resources: the reception desk stocked some basic grocery items and gourmet food items including wine, beer and spirits (at a premium of course). Very nice as if you forgot an essential item it would be a very long drive to the nearest town.
Amenities: Excellent. Clean, ample toilet stalls, showers. Well maintained. Big community cooking, eating and sink facilities (indoor) with a fire and plenty of seating and tables. Indoor facilities also had about 8 hot plates in addition to BBQ’s . Also outdoor BBQ’s and tables and chairs. There were laundry facilities as well. Paths to the toilets are lit at night which was a bonus.
Proximity to Cradle Mountain: 10-15 min walk to shuttle to all the Cradle Mountain hiking trails. Considering how many trails start at Cradle Mountain, you really need to stay for more than 1 night to get a reasonable number of walks under your belt.

Con’s:
Availability: we arrived without a booking the week before Easter. There were no powered sites left but plenty of non-powered sites. If you can book ahead do so but if you want to be flexible just know you might not get powered sites (I would guess that during Christmas/New Years and Easter you would need to book for any site).
Resources: the little shop with groceries was expensive but considering how far you would need to drive to the next grocery shop I guess they can be! Just arrive with all your food.
Location: You cannot drive a van or anything larger than a car to the Cradle Mountain trail heads. So you will need to take a shuttle from the parks office to the hiking trails. It is a good 10-15 minute walk to the parks office shuttle to all the Cradle Mountain hiking trails. Really, you are in the wrong place if a 10-15 min walk is going to be a problem :)
Amenities: hot plates in kitchen facility took a long time to heat and didn’t get very hot. Water at sites and in kitchen is not potable. You will need to bring in your own drinking water.
Price: at $35 a night for a non-powered site it is a little more expensive than most camp grounds in Tasmania but it was worth it for us.
