“Really great place for cheaper than hotels.”
Reviewed February 13, 2013

I stayed in a my own private room amongst the backpackers. It had a double bed and a bunk bed. The room was comfortable and surrounded by trees, so it felt very natural. At night, some wildlife come right up to the building (wallabies, devils). I like the natural timbers of the building. The common room was adequate and a great place to meet other backpackers. The think about places like Cradle Mountain is that everyone is there for the same reason... to explore and hike. So it's great to talk to others about the day's experiences and recommend walking tracks. The shower/toilet block is close by and adequate. The water was nice and hot. Recommended.

We stayed for 2 night good warm cabins as it was 3deg outside in the morning. Great for those that are walker/ hicker or outdoories folks.
Lots of wild life to see however on the down side this was quite expenseive for a cabin in a van park. Cabins 1 to 12 close to Laudry the rest are a little hike away as there are no paths between cabins.

We stayed in a family bunk room in the backpacker accommodation. We were on a budget, so it was the best option for us in the Cradle Mountain township. It was fine, but I was pretty happy to check out. There was only 2 of us in a room designed for 4, and it was pretty squishy. The room was pretty stuffy and the only way to ventilate it was to open the door and let in the air and all the flies as well. The walls were so thin that I could hear the man in the next room snoring. The kitchen and meals area is not well designed for sharing by 6 cabins - there was one small stove top and only one sink. The bathrooms looked clean enough but after 4 days I noticed that the same clumps of hair and dirt were there every day. The location is great. There's wallabies hopping around in the bushes near the cabins. And you're close enough to walk to the National Park visitor centre to catch the shuttle bus. If you're on a budget, then this is fine. Just don't expect too much.

We stayed here for 2 nights with 4 adults and 3 kids in a powered site. We reached at 7PM on Christmas holiday period and the temperature was 2 degree. We went to our site and shocked to see the ground. The ground was full of hard rock surface and it is not a tent site. Hence the office was closed and we started to setup the tents and it taken nearly more than 2 hours on that temperature. Many of our pegs bent down and got some hammer hits on our fingers.

This powered site is only suitable for Caravans and not for tents. Next to my powered site there was a big caravan parked closely to our tent. It was dangerous for us in case of any accidents. See the photos for evidence.

We tour around the park and found many unpowered sites were soft sand. We asked the management and they argued and responded that in mostly in Australia all powered sites are hard rock surface. It looks like they never visited other than Cradle Mountain. They never informed us prior booking that powered site is not suitable for tents. When I asked an enquiry during booking a lady rudely answered me “I am currently flood up and I can’t answer you”. They never asked any apologies for their mistakes.

Don’t go with powered site for tenting. Bush camping is 1000 times better than this site.

Pros:
1. Good for Caravan but not for Tents
2. Amenities are reasonable
3. Park is located naturally
4. At night time you can see lot of animals next to your tent.

Cons:
1. Poor management
2. No proper response
3. Expensive but worthless powered site
4. Poor communication

Room Tip: If you want to go with tent then go with unpowered site. That is best for tenting.

Sadly we only got to stay here for 1 night, I immediately regretted this after arriving. The location was absolutely amazing, set completely in the wilderness, it was an awesome experience. We had wallabies and possums at our door which our son found so exciting. It was right opposite the Cradle Mountain visitor centre where you could jump on the shuttle bus and head straight into the national park for a day of beautiful walking trails and scenery. We loved this park and are so looking forward to another stay, but much longer next time.

Decent tent camping very well located in attractive setting. Excellent showers and communal kitchen. Well-stocked campground store. Lots of rvs and trailers too though we were on foot with our backpacks. Excellent place for night before Overland Track. Very friendly staff. Wallabes and wombats etc around campground at dusk.

Cradle mountain is magical and this park is in a great spot. Some smiles please ladies at reception - on 16th January am - cant be that difficult. (They were very helpful on the phone) The facilities have some maintenance issues. The bathroom facilities are fairly shocking. I noticed that soap gets filled around lunchtime (male only) but nothing else gets attention. Rubbish is left on the floor. No way is it even swept or any attempt made to remove weeks old rubbish. This is in both male and female bathrooms. It doesn't help to tell staff either. Claire at reception replied: I'll make a note. Definitely not a Big 4 property. Shame on you.
