This place is magical. My strong recommendation is to take a picnic dinner and make an evening of it as it's so peaceful. Breakfast might be good too- an hour after day break . Try not to rush it and expect to see a platypus straight up- although you may! I walked the length of the path and after about 30mins I saw a platypus! It only gets more beautiful the further up the path you go. There are some platforms to stand on too. I was there in mid jan from around 7pm till 8pm which worked well. I think I would have seen more if I'd stayed till 9pm-dark. 5.30 pm was suggested as a good time but I think closer to 'dusk' worked well for me. Overcast days are better too apparently. There is room for kids to play in around the giant ferns. A hidden gem!

This is one of Tasmania's 60 Great Short Walks and takes you along the bank of the Emu River not far from the centre of Burnie.

The sign says, "Quiet observers often see platypus from the picnic area". We tried to be very quiet but unfortunately didn't see any.

The walk is not far from the site of the old Paper Mill but you would have no idea of this when you do the walk.

The tree ferns are amazing here!
