“A great escape”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 26, 2012

We spent one night here recently and had a wonderful night. The hosts couldn't have been more accomodating and their aim was for us to have to do as little as possible. The view is magnificent and well worth the trip to the Island and the 'cockpit' takes advantage of this in the best way. We are looking forward to going back.

We booked The Shed for 2 nights recently as a family with 5 kids. It was just what we wanted - comfy Aussie shack: laid back style, clean, lots of aged timber, excellent beds, pristine/high quality linen.

One of the double rooms leads to the bunk bed room with a curtain between. Fine for us. Decent sized fridge freezer. Basic washing machine but makes sense given that all the water is from tanks. A small DVD player would be useful for kids' timeout for longer stays/wet weather. Some cracks in the new grouting around the bath but no big deal in an otherwise newly fitted bath/shower room.

Don't stay here if you need deluxe surroundings.

The gardens have an amazing view although not from the outside deck area. The beaches nearby are stunning. Not far from the general store at Adventure Bay and the fantastic Berry Farm. Being a walk across the lawn to the outstanding Hothouse Cafe is perfect!

The hosts are amazingly friendly and relaxed. In a different age, completely - they were not around for check-out due to a visit they had to make overnight the previous night so we just left a message and agreed to sort out payment over the phone! Great value for money for a large family. We'll definitely return.

If you like staying in grandma's holiday house , surrounded by beautiful old fashioned English gardens , quirky comfortable beds and furnishings , you will love this . Very personable hosts , could not be more accomodating, wonderful and well placed place to stay on one of Australia's must magic locations

When this place was brand new it was probably a fantastic romantic getaway....this was obviously some time ago though. My partner and I were distinctly underwhelmed at the place whose only redeeming feature was the amazing view, but I'm pretty sure the hosts weren't reponsible for sorting this out. In fact the only reason this place gets two stars is because of its outlook.

Whilst the owners are probably not responsible for the contents of this particular website we booked the 'cockpit' based on the description given on a bruny island tourist website . Given that it was October when we stayed we liked the idea of a outdoor spa bath and heated floor. If you check the attached photos, you will see the spa bath has been moved and it'd be a bit far to walk in your gown and slippers (Not provided so bring your own - but an assortment of hats were provided) and the plumbing looks a bit suspect too...

There were some comedy moments, like when we discovered the picture frame stuffed into a hole by the bedside (see picture), the doorknob to the main door that could lock you in at any time, the bizarre tiny mirrors on the ceiling so that you can check the lightbulbs whilst making out (?)...Oh and the hothouse cafe? This is a polypropelene tunnel with old plastic chairs in it that looks like the scene you'd expect the morning after a particuarly rough wedding reception that ended in a big fight.

Please don't get me wrong, I'm not adverse to roughing it for a bit, particuarly when you're in a fantastic location but when you pay $250 a night for a draughty shack, you do tend to get a little annoyed.

Well, where do i begin?

My husband and i stayed one night at the Morella Island Estate in the 'Cockpit' cabin last Friday night. we arrived at about 2pm and was greeted warmly by Michael (who owns this beautiful property along with his wife Fiona), and was easily directed to the 'cockpit'. Words can't describe the view from this cabin! But not only is the location spectacular, so is the accommodation!! Spotlessly clean, wonderfully presented and incorporating luxurious linen, bath towels, robes, etc. A complimentary bottle of bubbly and choccies on arrival was a nice touch too, but by far the best for us was the large, private hot-tub!! What a relaxing way to spend an afternoon (after driving for 5 hours!), or an evening under the stars, or a 'first-thing-in-the-morning' dip! We were in heaven!

The cockpit is self-catering, although we just booked and had dinner at the Hothouse Cafe (on-site), and enjoyed a fabulous meal prepared by Fiona. Five stars for the gourmet delicacies! Breakfast is also included in the price, and you won't be disappointed there either! We decided to take our brekky basket with us and prepare it at our leisure the next morning (although you can have Michael and Fiona cook you up a treat in the cafe when you crawl out of bed - and stop gazing at the view!) We enjoyed, cereal, turkish bread & spreads, eggs, bacon, croissants, tomatoes and coffee/tea.

This would be a fantastic place for anyone wanting a secluded, romantic break away! Especially for honeymooners or anniversaries, etc. It would be fabulous in summer or winter since the views are awesome (sunrises/sunsets or thunderstorms!), there is a woodheater which would be SO cosy in winter.

Nothing was too much trouble for the hosts, they are very 'guest concience', and we were delighted to celebrate our 10th Wedding anniversary at Morella, and will be sure to return again!

The only 'negative' thing i would even mention is that Michael mentioned he 'might' pop up later to check on the hot-tub and make sure it was all working fine, but after an hour or so, we had settled in and decided to take a hot-tub dip (naked!), when we heard someone arrive at the door. It was only the owners son delivering firewood to the back door, but we still made a mad dash for our robes feeling like naughty school kids! A bit of an invasion of privacy when you think you're going to be all alone for the rest of your trip! But that was the only critical point i could find!

Top marks to Morella Island Retreat and Michael and Fiona!

This property was for sale and it was obvious the owners were putting no money into it. It was rundown and not very clean. The furniture was dirty and broken down, there were no screens on our bedroom upstairs so we were not able to leave the patio doors open at night. It was an A-frame bldg. so got very hot. The water was brown. When we spoke to the person in charge, we were told it would probably clear up in a day. It didn't, so we left after a couple of nights. The only positive was, it had lovely views over the D'estreaux Channel. It might be better to go for a day trip to Bruny Is. or camp.
