“Fantastic experience”
Reviewed February 22, 2013 via mobile

My husband and I were staying in the mountains for only 2 nights and after reading the reviews I was pleasantly surprised to be able to book a table at quite short notice on a Sunday night. We had the 5 course menu and the selected wines to accompany each course. The food lived up to our expectations. We have eaten in a number of the highly rated restaurants in Sydney, paid nearly three times what we paid at Nineteen23 and were less than impressed than we were here. The beetroot sale with goats curd was a standout. Also the wait staff were friendly without being overbearing.
A real gem and we will definitely be back.

“Excellent meal in Blue Mountains”
Reviewed January 12, 2013

We were staying at the Silvermere guest house and to have this literally on our door step was extremely convenient -- and what a meal -- great quality and outstanding value for the quality of the food, cuisine and wine. Beautiful view of the mountains too as we ate. They said the wine flight was 160ml per glass (except the desert wine -- so with 5 regular wines that's more than a bottle of wine already! All the courses beautifully cooked and very tasty. My only very minor quibble is that they put plates in the centre for "sharing". There were 4 of us, and they put two plates in the middle each time; so we then had to transfer half the portion from one of the centre plates to an individual plate, and sometimes this wasn't easily divisible -- e.g. 3 slides of parma ham between 2. And this meant there was often wasted sauce or jus on the serving plate -- when the style is only to put very small quantities on, this just wastes the precious sauce/coulis/jus. For one of the courses I think they saw us trying to scrape up the jus and they brought a little jug out with extra jus. I can't see this saves much in washing up so I really dont know what the point of this is. But let me emphasise this was a tiny quiblle in an otherwise fantastic meal -- don't miss it if you are in the area.

“too pompous, too convoluted”
Reviewed January 5, 2013

Nineteen23 functions on the principle of a tasting menu, with seven dishes. Strangely enough, the menu offers several choices, but the chef decides what will be served with no discretion left to the diner. Matching wines, mostly from from New South Wales, are offered and, although served in minute amounts, are truly excellent selections. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said of the food, which is overly complex and somewhat pretentious. For example, one of the dishes was “ocean trout, za’artar (zatar) crust, semi dried tomatoes, eggplant, micro parsley, herb oil, feta”. Even though the feta cheese was missing for some reason or other, there are simply too many ingredients, too many conflicting flavors, making the result uninteresting and confusing. Truly artistic cooking consists of highlighting flavors with the judicious use of herbs and spices, not compounding heavy flavors like zatar and eggplant to drown out the delicate flavor of the trout. Also lacking in balance and delicacy was the pork terrine, one of the starters, which was overburdened with too much gelatin, giving it a rubbery consistency. But the vanilla mascarpone desert was outstanding, even though it arrived at the table accompanied by six other irrelevant ingredients. In summary, the food at Nineteen23 fails because it is too pompous, too convoluted. The palate is overwhelmed by too many conflicting tastes. When the bill arrived, we found that it had been artificially inflated by a spurious currency conversion from Australian dollars at a bloated rate that the manager refused to correct. He simply said, “Sorry, pay Australian cash, or accept the conversion rate.” I suppose it was simply his way of transferring the bank’s merchant fees to the customer.

“Amazing food! Our favorite restaurant.”
Reviewed January 4, 2013

We love this restaurant - food is beautifully presented and all sourced from local providers. We had the degustation menu with wine and it is now our favorite restaurant! Very affordable prices and so much better than what's on offer in Sydney. Thanks guys, were looking forward to coming back soon.
