Check-in, lady had to unlock the sliding door to allow me in. Advised that black sliding gates close and go into lockdown at 8pm (memories of the movie '28 Days'). I felt more secure when we parked and found 12 tradesmens utes around the car parking! Onsite dinner.... Think primitive and survival, with 1950's flashing light bulbs and hang made BBQ. yelling could be heard in the streets at 3am.... At sunrise, we made a beeline for the maximum security gates and sped off in the dust heading up north. Its ok but make sure you get your food wine supplies by 6pm as the town locks their doors and bolts the gates right on sunset...

We didn't travel much, until this year, so bear this in mind about our comments. We went to Walgett to visit our daughter and to have our grand daughter's birthday. We stayed at the Walgett Motel for 5 nights and found it very comfortable. We checked in advance that my grand daughter could use the pool even though she wasn't a guest and the owners were OK with that. They gave us the room nearest the pool The breakfast was good and came through a quaint serving hatch into a cupboard inside the room. the room airconditioner was a modern split system type and worked very well. TheTV had 11 channels including Foxtel movies at no charge. The motel is right on the main street and about 200m to the local public olympic swimming pool which was excellent. The food at the bowling club, again a short walk, was very good. We had butter chicken at $15 (never had better!) Walgett isn't really set up as a tourist destination, most tourists pass through to visit Lightning ridge. Consequently the tourist info center and the library aren't open weekends and that also includes the museum, which is only opened by appt through the TIC. In summary the town and motel were both good and as we walked a around town a fair bit (we travelled to Walgett by Countylink train and bus) we never felt unwelcome or uncomfortable with the townspeople.

Room Tip: Depending on the season there can be a lot of trucks parked on the main street out front ready for a...

The basic country motel room. A bit disconcerting when on arrival the receptionist refuses to open the door until you confirm you want accommodation. The bathroom had a problem with a leaking toilet. Needed to be careful where one stepped. The bed was comfortable. However, you tended to feel like you were in a war zone as the security gates were locked at 8pm - you were given a key to the gates but were advised to make sure your car was locked up. My advice would be if you can given Walgett a miss as there appears to be lots of issues within the town that need to be addressed.

Clean, friendly and secure - would stay again. Recommend dinner at RSL just down yonder. Depending upon your itinerary though Lightening Ridge may be better option.

The Walgett Motel is your basic outback style with budget and standard accommodation ranging in price from $58-$79 a night. Try to book the latter as the rooms are a lot larger. There is a small pool and restaurant on the premises. Parking and security is enhanced with high perimeter fencing. The motel is at the quiet end of the main street across the road from the Walgett Sporting Club. This Club has good clientele and facilities including Bistro, Bar, Lounge together with Tennis Courts and Lawn Bowls. Walgett has a great Visitor Information and Internet access point across the road from the Council Chambers.
