“A Delight”
Reviewed March 23, 2013

The Caves House staff and experience is A class. Since the hotel has been refurbished and supported by the NSW Government, it is more that worth a night's stay. We had a wonderful 24hrs - cave tour, bar, dining, and wonderful room. Best part was no mobile reception (Optus), not TV in the room, and no wi-fi interent. So take a chance and stay at the bottom of one of the Blue Mountains most lovely valleys.

Room Tip: Choose from ensuite or shared facilities. Both work fine.

It rained the weekend we went but that didn't matter. The caves were very active which was great to see and we could still do some walks.
The fine dining was fabulous. The meals were fantastic and every main meal was gluten free plus a delicious dessert. They gave me beautiful gluten free toast for breakfast and there was plenty to eat.
The fire was roaring in the communal lounge room - a great place to sit back and relax in.

I stayed here just over fifty years ago as a child and was so pleased they had retained the hotel in its original style. The beds are so comfy and very well kept with tea and coffee facilities in the room. They is also an ironing board and iron in the room. There is no TV in the room but there is a pool table and games room with plenty to do. The dining room has a great menu or the bar serves meals as well and the girls in the bar are very entertaining making their cocktails. The experience of the cave tours are amazing. Wished I had booked for a longer stay than just over night. Breakfast was more than adequate with everything ranging from cereals, fresh fruit, variety of breads and toast, sausages, eggs, bacon, beans, hash browns, muffins, yoghurt. The bush walks in the area is great as well.

Room Tip: Book more than one cave tour and you get a discount. The rooms in the old building are quiet we sta...

Overall had a very nice experience here. Stayed midweek (Wednesday) and the hotel was probably 30% occupied. Service was smiley and helpful, if a little understaffed ( had to wait approx 30 min to check in as the lone staff managing reception was also manning the souvenir gift store which just happened to hv a group of visitors wanting to look/buy when we wanted to check in at about 4 pm. But the lady was apologetic and was obviously doing her best).
The hotel itself is old world charm. Recently refurbished - the decor, wallpaper, old pictures added to the ambience. We stayed in a lovely room (very comfy beds) but was marred by the rather ugly aluminum insulation casing that wrapped round the heating pipes for the radiator. There was an iron + ironing board and tea/coffee making facilities. The bathroom was a little dated - toilets should be replaced and there were cobwebs in the corners. No TV or mobile reception so it was a quiet restful night (there was a TV/DVD player in the lounge room on the ground floor),

The restaurant looked nice but we opted to eat in the bar ( meals served till 8 pm and half the price of the restaurant). Atter a day of caving - the bar bistro was just fine. Food was quite delicious and reasonably priced - service was chirpy and friendly.

Overall - a nice getaway. Not 4 or 5 star luxe but the main attraction are the caves (awesome experience doing the plughole adventure....probably not for those who are claustrophobic). So it was a pleasant surprise to find above average accommodation and food. Kudos to the management for trying. Its obvious they are trying hard but to edge into that 4 star plus category, a little more attention to the details and finer points is probably needed. But this is probably the only place to stay if you are caving. Other options are backpacker style dorms or cottages.

Room Tip: Ensure you book a room with ensuite toilet/bathroom. The plughole tour is an awesome experience - ru...

It’s a great getaway within only three hours from Canberra or Sydney. The House itself is sitting in a small gorge. It is a historic building that creates a certain atmosphere of the place. And it is a perfect match to the surrounding mountains and caves.
This is the place for those who want to switch off from the routine of the urban life. The rooms have no TVs, phones, Wi-Fi, and you need to share bathrooms. Apparently, the concept also contributes to the historical image of the building situated in the middle of awesome natural formations.
We spent five nights in Jenolan, but couldn’t surrender the achievements of civilization. So we opted for Mountain Lodge, motel-style accommodation located behind Jenolan Caves House. It offers studio apartments with small kitchenettes and bathrooms, and TV and phone are available there (still no Wi-Fi). The Lodge apparently is not new and requires some refurbishment, but strangely it only adds to the local ambience.
Chisholm’s restaurant and Jeremiah’s bar offer decent food. We had our breakfasts and a couple of lunches in our room (it is equipped with a microwave and a fridge) with dinners at the restaurant or the bar.
We spent three days going to caves and for the fourth went to Katoomba to have a look at Blue Mountains at their best. It was an interesting contrast between the underground life of the caves and magnificent formations of the mountains.
By all means, it was a trip to a great place with a nice accommodation.

Room Tip: If you can't deal without TV and don't like shared bathrooms, take a room at Mountain Lodge...

My partner and I have just come back from Jenolan caves after a spur of the moment decision to get away from Canberra for the weekend. It is an easy 3 hour drive from canberra down some very scenic roads .... dirt roads at times but not too bad. Pulling up at the house we were checked into a room within the Cave House. As we booked at the last minute the only too available was with a shared bathroom. Generally I would not go for this option but it wasn't the worst decision . The room has no TV whic serves a great purpose and is well appointed and clean. The bathroom not so much. But I wouldn't complain at $79 p/n.
The restaurant is beautiful and the bar was great. Staff were very happy and provided great service. They seem to live on site and work pretty much every shift.
We took the River Cabe tour which takes 2 hrs but was worth every penny. Ted Matthews the tour guide was exceptional with a wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm for the caves . The walks up to the Carlotta arch and further on we're quite literally breath taking.
Anyways we had an amazing time and hope to be back soon to do the "plug hole ".

Thank you to all staff. And even though it seems that the place is going to be sold off we hope the next owner takes greater care if it .

I have wanted to stay at Jenolan Caves House for a long time. We finally made it and I was not disappointed. I was enchanted by the décor, elegant staircases, long corridors and comfortable-looking places to sit and read, chat or think dotted around. We were originally booked into the motel section, but the receptionist took one look at my grey hair and offered us a classic room in Caves house where it would be quieter. Our room had an ensuite with a shower for the disabled which meant we had some logistical problems with the wet bathroom floor. The room was clean and well-maintained; the furniture charming period pieces, except for the wonderfully comfortable modern bed. Our dinner in the Grand Dining Room was delicious and I was relieved to see several gf options on the menu. Breakfast was very large.
We had an excellent tour of the Imperial Cave with a knowledgeable and interesting guide. Caves House is a lovely place to stay, quiet and very different from most hotels. The caves are understandably a long, twisting drive from any bright lights; it’s a place to relax, get away from the busy world and enjoy some of nature’s amazing sights.
