“The Real "Australia"”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 24, 2009

Escaping from the city is good for everyone but when finding yourself at Turon Gates ..then thats when the magical appeal of our divine country really comes "home".
The idyllic and tranquille landscape coupled with the remoteness of location amplified the feeling of liberation and freedom... ...That in turn for me was priceless. Whether relaxing or being active..whether sampling the delights of local wineries or popping in to see the owners Sonya & Soren ...the magical experience that resonates around Turon Gates left a huge impression on me and my friends. You see, having arrived in Australia 20 years ago I thought ALL of Australia ressembled Turon Gates. I thought I'd see Kanagaroos every morrning passing my window...rippling brooks evrywhere to soothe my tired feet and a regular flurry of local birds singing in harmony on my window ledge... Like most, I located to the city..but for me in particular ..Turon Gates represented amd still represents the REAL Australia and one we all need to savour and take home with us until the next visit that is!. The only thing missing was Hugh Jackman on horseback..the horses were there..but Mr Jackman was nowhere to be seen!

We were there over a Xmas period...no water on Xmas day, buckets to flush the toilets.Fence broken, curtains in disrepair ,grubby furniture too.Nightmare!
When we complained we were offered 5% off our next trip....like we would return!

Mmmm...I read the previous review "vulnerable in the extreme' and can only conclude that these people have never been outside of a city. Seriously, what did they think was going to happen? A visit by the boogie man? This place is quite off the beaten track and that, of course, is the whole point. There are two types of accommodation - the river cabins and the mountain lodges. We stayed in river cabin number five - beautifully situated overlooking the crystal clear river, but the cabin itself was a bit tired and note really great value. We had friends who stayed in other cabins, which had obviously recently been refurbed with new kitchens and bathrooms - these were pretty good. We also had firends who stayed in one of the newer, bigger mountain lodge properties and these are really quite lovely and very good value (esp compared with the river cabins). Its a great place where you can just sit by the river or go for walks.

Cabin No 5 at Turongates was cold, creepy, overpriced and under-resourced, When were weren't feeling ripped-off, we were scared out of our wits The manager was non-existent and the location was isolated in the extreme. We hid the axe and arranged turns to keep watch. We fled at the first light of day and WILL NEVER return. This was definitely a bum steer. Be warned and take care, especially in the bush-fire season,

This is the most peaceful and silent place they we have stayed in. The cabin was clean and roomy with enough amenities to enjoy a truly tranquil holiday. the mountain goats do not bother you or interact with people at all. we had our car outside the whole time and the goats did not go near it. the clear star-filled evenings spent lying on a rug with a glass of wine experiencing a view only dreamed off. The stars seemed so close to our mountain top haven. Basic requirements are all that you need. No washing machine no spa bath no mobile coverage(only minimal if you drive around the property was our experience)no other person in sight the whole time. Could write lots more but really you need to holiday there your self. Complimentary wine and honey on your arrival in your cabin. We stayed for the Australia Day Long Weekend and the weather was perfect. Could not take enough photos of the sunrise/sunset. Solar powered electricity and water pumped from local source. Both in plentiful supplies. A paradise for couples and safe for families with kids that can explore and play without harm. leave the environment how you found it and you will be appreciated.

Showers hot and excellent. Road very tortuous. Camping a bit expensive ie $24 +$6 extra for a campervan +$6 for each pet with no power.

If you're searching 4 a tranquil bush retreat look no further. This place is absolutely awesome! We started out Fri lunch time from Syd for a w/e in 1 of the log cabins at the start of Aug '08 (took 3.5hrs). I recommend getting there in daylight as it's off the beaten track & if it's winter it's essential you get a good fire started. From the main road to the cabins is a beautiful drive with kangaroos, cows, sheep & wild goats roaming the hillside. A 4 wheel drive would be gr8 but a normal car will get your there if the weather is ok.
On the property-map the cabins look close together though this is definitely not the case. We were in River Cabin 5, right on the river with a balcony, no phone/radio signal, no power points. Lights & cooking are solar/gas & not having a TV turned out to be fantastic - we played games, hiked and it snowed whilst we were horseriding! It is FREEZING at this time of year so pack stacks of clothes, gloves. scarves, bed socks, boots etc (don't take good shoes, you've never seen so much animal dung). Our 8yr old girl loved it, we didn't want to leave & are planning a week next time with heaps of friends. A week with a single child would be too long though I think.
The cabins are really nice with a king size bed plus many single beds & instant hot water - all the necessities are provided except linen but you can hire this. You need to take all food & drink supplies and you need to clean the cabin when you leave. My highlight was the horse we bumped into on a bush walk that decided to hang out with us for awhile & our daughter's was roasting marshmellows in the fire. A hammock is provided for lazing in the winter sun with a good book & your man gets to chop wood with an axe & cook on a bush BBQ ... what more can you ask for? Would be ideal for overseas vistors to get a real taste of the Aussie bush & wildlife.

  • Liked — Secluded, log fire, sleeps many, no TV or phone signal, wildlife, horseriding
  • Disliked — a couple of harmless huntsman spiders found their way inside, it's really cold without the fire
