Los Naranjos Retreat
Ranked #3 of 6 Yelapa B&B and Inns
Reviewed November 29, 2011

I attended a yoga retreat through Maya Whole Health Studio based out of Renton, WA (www.mayawholehealth.com). The retreat was a five night stay where we were lead into the lush jungle and returned fully changed. I cannot express enough how much Los Naranjos is a magical, unique and amazing place. Every moment we found ourselves in awe of what the rich jungle would show us. From beautiful butterflies to an incredible waterfall (on-site) I felt that I was in another world.

The rooms are very rustic. Meaning, you are sleeping in open air palapas. The beds are hanging and are enclosed with a mosquito net (which you need). There are flushable shared toilets and showers. Daily maid service, so everything is clean - but remember, you are in the jungle and everything is open air. These are not the accommodations that would fit the needs of every traveller. But I personally found that it made me connect more to what I actually needed and I had absolutely everything I needed and more!

Let's talk food... we opted for two prepared meals by the Los Naranjos staff each day, and let me tell you it was so delicious, healthy and so worth it! They use local foods and accommodated to everyones dietary restrictions. We had beautiful fruit platters every morning along with some sort of egg dish. For dinner, they would cook us Mexican dishes (mainly vegetarian) that were so good I'm drooling as I write this.

Location... the location is about a 10-15 minute walk from the beach. It's a lovely walk, but I wanted to point out that this place is more about it's unique location away from the touristy beach places. The people who took care of us were Rafa, Maria and Michel. They were so open and beautiful. They made us feel at home from the moment we arrived, showed us an amazing time and were so good to us.

If you dare to take a journey into the jungle, the pay off is unmeasurable. Doing a yoga retreat at this surreal place rested my soul and made me come back to the "real world" a renewed and changed person. I want to thank the people at Los Naranjos for making a space full of love and knowledge. Don't miss an opportunity to explore this AMAZING place!

Our stay at Los Naranjos was amazing. Showers with no roofs, and sleeping in a hamock. Good restaurants are close by. The hosts were amazing and lined up the fishing trip of a life time for us.
We hope to make it back there some day soon. I would suggest though a flashlight and good bug spray for no seeums if they bother you.

I had no idea what to expect before we arrived at Los Naranjos. I knew only what we had seen from the few pictures on their website - that it was a collection of open-air "palapas" (palm-thatch-roofed huts) surrounded by beautiful jungle scenery and gardens, about a fifteen minute hike uphill from the beach of Yelapa. We wound up spending four nights there, and it was an amazing experience, one that I would recommend to anyone who wants to go off the beaten path (even for Yelapa!) and meet some wonderful, interesting people.

First, the settings: Very serene and peaceful. The beds and rooms are cleaned everyday, and there were fresh flowers and good, clean water put by the bedside daily. I can't describe the beauty of this place - it is upriver from the town and there is a waterfall on the property, so it is very lush. There are beautiful flowers and plants everywhere, but it is by no means overgrown - it is evident the amount of work and upkeep that is put into this place by the people who run it. Also, there are so many jungle birds, as well as a few domestic dogs and cats (all super cuddly!) that live there, so it is a good place for animal lovers.

Next, the people, which for me is what really made this place great, and why I will likely return. If you want to have solitude and enjoy the serenity of nature, this is a wonderful place, and they will leave you to yourself. However, if you want to hang out in the communal area and get to know the people who live there and are passing through, I thoroughly recommend it. It is a hidden gem, and perhaps for that reason it attracts interesting people. The caretaker (Jarrett), his wife Nathalia, Rafa, Michel, and others who stay there for extended or short periods of time are all very kind and open to meeting new people. You will feel like part of the family. They cook large meals and play music and are just generally very accepting, peaceful people who have an evident love of life which is infectious and makes the visitor feel comfortable.

Overall, if you're looking for a hotel with internet and room service and beach-side private suites, then this is not for you, but then again the entire town of Yelapa would not be for you. If, however, you want to get away and stay in an enchanting, lovely spot where time slows down, and perhaps meet some wonderful people, then this is the place for you.
