We decided to skip the resort-type vacation because those tend to get boring quickly. Yelapa Oasis seemed perfect, and it was! The couple that runs it are great people, very welcoming and warm. Can't beat the price ($15/night). What would have made the stay more comfortable would be a lamp on the nightstand, but we did fine with headlamps and flashlights. If you are looking for an adventure (in the good sense of the word), I would highly recommend it. If you are looking to stay inside all day....well, then you can do that at home, right?

I really enjoyed my stay at The Yelapa Oasis, which is housed in a huge palapa. It’s even an adventure getting there! You can walk up the stairs through the old town or simply wade across the river after jumping off the water taxi. (The latter is quicker.) Though a bit skeptical about staying in the hostel-like lodging with sheets for walls and doors and no locks, I quickly adjusted. I felt relatively safe and slept well. The windows didn’t close all the way, so it was a bit cool at night. However, a light blanket was provided for added warmth. The sleeping area was on an open floor plan with a balcony and lounging area and everything was extremely neat and clean.

The immaculate bathrooms were located outside in a separate building, so I had to walk outside in the dark to use the facilities at night. Thank goodness I always travel with a flashlight and the outside lights came on to light my path. (If you’re skittish about such things, it can be a bit unnerving.) The showers are located outside with curtains for privacy. That can be an adventure, depending on how you look it. The water was piping hot; a welcome contrast to the cool evening air.

The staff was extremely polite, helpful, and reassuring. They patiently answered my questions about safety and even offered to allow me to stash my belongings whilst I looked for other lodging. In the end, The Yelapa Oasis was the best bet for the atmosphere and the money.
