We took friends from NZ who wanted an authentic English pub experience; they were not disappointed. Great menu, excellent local beers and charming service. Well done.

This restaurant was recommended to us & as a group of friends who eat out regularly we ALL agree that the meal we had has been the best so far to date. We had a lovely warm welcome, we were shown to our table with the menus already place on the table for us. The young lady informed us that ALL their produce is sourced locally & freshly cooked. She also told us that the size of the menu is only small because they only purchase what ever is in season. We ordered our starters which we didn't have to wait long for & full credit to the chef & staff the presentation was excellent [Masterchef standard] & the food tasted nice as well. Our main course once again was beautifully cooked - we had 2 plaice & 2 mullett which was cooked perfectly & again presentation was excellent & the desserts matched the quality & presentation of the rest of the meal. The restaurant is full of quirky bits & pieces which gives it a lovely atmosphere. We found it excellent value for money & we would highly recommend you make a visit to The Horse Guards Inn.

What a find, after doing some research drove here for a birthday lunch and what a lunch. As we hadn't booked there were no tables inside however it was warm enough to eat in the garden. The food was very good and the staff and service were excellent, all of the produce tasted fresh and was well cooked and very nicely presented. Will return!

We were recommended to eat at the Horse Guards Inn by a friend who lives locally and he was absolutely right. It's easy to find in a picturesque Sussex village. Just look for the church with a crown instead of a spire on the right hand side as you leave Petworth on the A272. The inn is up the hill just across the road from the church and it does indeed have views of the South Downs.

It was a busy evening and we were left to look at the menus for much longer than I would have liked, while staff rushed in and out of our section of the dining room, serving the other tables. You could try to catch the waiters' eyes or you could read the blackboard showing where they source their food - locally wherever possible - or both.

The others ordered ham hock with cabbage and crushed potatoes. When they ate the first bite they both said "Mmmmm" in appreciation. It looked good, they said it was delicious. My rare beef salad was excellent, beautifully pink and very enjoyable though it was accompanied by too many tomatoes (not on the menu) for my taste. I'm not keen on lentils normally but these were excellent. This is original and hearty food well above the standard of your average pub.

Because it had originally taken so long to order, we asked if we could order puddings right away. They said yes, brought us the menus - and forgot about us. Fortunately they did remember in the end and the plum cobbler (a sort of giant helping of plum crumble) could have fed us all.

The chef deserves 5 stars for their well cooked food. The service was friendly but it was not as efficient as we would have liked and this had an impact on our enjoyment. We will certainly come back to enjoy the food again when we have more time!
