The Old Railway Station
Ranked #1 of 17 Petworth B&B and Inns
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed June 24, 2010

We spent a couple of nights at The Old Railway Station in June and everything was perfect even to the glorious weather. This place is so lovingly restored that you feel as if you have stepped into a golden era of comfort where life seems to be taken at a much slower pace. The carriages are set out to a very high quality spec and finsih, with everything you need for an enjoyable stay. There is a flat screen TV, plenty of choice of complimentary teas, coffee etc, very comfy bed and it brings in the modern with the age of luxury you would get in days gone by.
The owner and the staff are most helpful and there is a great deal of history and literature available in the Old Waiting Room where guests are able to relax and take tea in the afternoon or drinks in the evening the hotel is licensed. On arrival you are asked what time you would like breakfast and are allocated a time as the breakfast is cooked from fresh and is of a very high standard - there are no corners cut here - fresh eggs, bacon, bread, sausages all of the best quality. We were lucky enough with the weather to take our breakfast on the platform which is a wonderful experience, but if the weather is poor the Waiting Room is charming.
The location is out of Petworth so you will need transport to get around but there is a pub at the top of the road called The Badgers which does very good evening meals. If you are going out in the evening to eat I would recommend The Cricketers at Duncton whichis a couple of miles away a five min drive but on a summers evening probably walkable - the food here is first class all homemade and very reasonably priced.
You don't have to be a railway enthusiast to enjoy this place just come for the experience we can definitely recommend it.

Helpful and attentive staff. Lovely surroundings. Great breakfast. Badgers pub in walking distance does lovely evening food. Small rooms of course as you're in a carriage but have everything you need including two wine glasses and bottle opener and umbrella in the wardrobe!! So lovely and quaint.

We stayed one night & wished it could have been longer. We were 2 couples, one from Montreal who are steam train buffs. We stayed in the station house as the Pulman was too expensive for us. We did not regret this for a moment. The rooms were lovely. We climbed the spiral staircase to our very pretty room which had drink making facilities & the best choice of teas etc. that I have seen in a B&B. The others had the twin ground floor room which was ideal if you were not that mobile. The breakfast was ample with a good choice & very well cooked. Staff were friendly & attentive to the right degree. We felt very much at home.

My wife and I stayed in 'Alicante' carriage last Saturday and Sunday night. I would recommend this B&B to others and have, in fact, done so today as a venue to stay that is so different to anything else. Great and helpful reception from the lady who emerged from the ticket office when we arrived. Fantastic breakfasts each morning.

We had dinner each night at Badgers. Food was good and the staff made us very welcome.

I'm not a train expert but I know there is a world of difference between a Pullman carriage that has been 'lovingly restored' to Bluebell Railway standards to 4 carriage shells being bought in to convert to B&B rooms. But the concept works well.

For us, the dust and cobwebs in our carriage shouldn't have been there.

My Husband and I stayed in one of the lovely Pulman Carriages. Soft plush furnishings and pure luxury can only describe the interiors of these lovely unique 'rooms'. Breakfast is served the the 'waiting room' of the old station. I thought I had woken up back in the 1940's. The breakfast was superb, with every little bit of care and attention to detail to make our stay practicly perfect. We look forward to staying again in the not too distant future.

A delightful experience as always. We found Gudmund and the team still recovering from a horrid review earlier in the year - all of the staff were devastated when one couple wrote a really awful review in the guest comment book. All we can say is that they must be very hard indeed to please.
We stayed in Flora 1 which, as we knew, was still a work in progress on the outside. Inside was the usual luxury we have come to expect. As it was Valentine's weekend, we were somewhat entertained by the very loud lovemaking in Flora 2 - it almost drowned out Match of the Day!
The Old Railway Station is indeed pricey - but it's quirky, eccentric and about the loveliest place we know to totally relax in a welcoming and special way.

My wife and I stayed here for 3 nights (for the price of 2) to celebrate a wedding anniversary and very nice it was too. Ladies will probably find a bit of dust here and there but nothing serious to worry about. The experience is the thing, as is the peace and quiet.

Breakfast is unusual with time slots and an order to things but the presentation and cooking itself is very good. All served by a charming lady which helps.

You can have a good look at the facilities on their website.

We had dinner at 3 local pubs; Badgers, at the top of the lane, The Cricketers at Duncton Green and Halfway Bridge Inn at Lodsworth. We rated them 7 out of 10, 9 out of 10 and 8 out of 10 respectively. They are all worth a go, particularly The Cricketers.

Petworth itself has some very nice antique shops and there are plenty of small towns locally to visit in the car.
