Several great meals - staff are eager to please and next time we're passing we'll probably stop in again. Layout works well as there are two definite dining areas but good bar space too. Great setting though the outside areas could be done with being refurbished, along with the benches and tables. Don't be put off. Always spotlessly clean and great coffee. Bream comes highly recommended but we haven't had a bad meal yet, and agree with other contributors that the roast potatoes are the best. All comes aesthetically pleasing and puddings are to die for.

My girlfriend and I selected The Star randomly for a late Sunday lunch. The welcome was warm, the ambience unfussy and friendly and we were made to feel most welcome. A request for a dish that wasn't on the weekend menu was granted and we settled down to await the meal.

The friendly and efficient service presented food that easily exceeded our expectations. It was obvious that good ingredients were used; what was most welcome was the care with which they were prepared, delivering well-balanced flavours to very good effect, in generous portions. To round this off, the bill was very reasonable and we left very well satisfied.

Albeit on the basis of one visit, I would happily recommend The Star to anyone: food served in a pub it may be, but pub food it wasn't. This was good-quality, tasty restaurant food that we enjoyed thoroughly.

Had lunch here after a locals recommendation. The service was friendly, quick and attentive. The food was beautifully presented and very tasty. The place was spotlessly clean and welcoming. We will definitely come back. Excellent.

The Star is in the centre of town with some parking outside and a large public car park only a few yards away.
We had a large family evening for nearly 40 of us of mixed ages. They made us very welcome and we had an area to ourselves , as well as being able to use the main bar.
We didnt have full meals, they gave us a choice of 3 grazing bowls (burgers/sausages/fish goujons) as we wanted to mingle rather than sit. There was also a choice of sweets for those who wanted them.
It all worked very well and the staff were great.
On finishing the landlord asked if we would come again and we certainly would.

We had a wonderful Sunday lunch at The Star in Petworth - a warm atmosphere on a rainy day. Chris, our host, was welcoming and generous - adding a couple of extra Yorkshire puddings for the travellers all the way from Australia.
The food was excellent - typical pub food, but prepared much better than your typical pub. Lovely warm atmosphere, good wine and beer and surprisingly good coffee.
