Petworth House is worth a visit, it's got an accessible park, the trip round the house is very interesting and there is a second hand bookshop and usually some good plants. There is often things on. Beware of recent changes. The main car park is now pay and display but free for NT members. The restaurant is now proper table service with a limited menu so you can only get snacks in the cafe. Unsurprisingly the restaurant was nearly empty and there was no room in the cafe. We gave up and ended up at Hemmingways in Hazlemere which serves excellent toasties, paninis and wraps as well as lots of yummy cake.

Choice of car parks, we did not attempt to go in the house (Which had a Constable exhibition at the time) as we had all been before and our main objective was to walk energetic dogs.
The park is well worth a visit of its own.

We called in to see the 'Constable in Sussex' exhibition.
Don't expect wall to wall grand masterpieces but rather a small focused exhibition of Constables work in the area that gives a valuable insight into his work. It included a visit to the library that was made available for him to work in during his visits.
The grounds would be enjoyable were it not for the wet January weather so that will have to wait for another time.

Well worth a visit especially to see the Constable exhibition which is currently running. You also get to visit the library where the artist's staying at the house met and did there painting, this is not usually open to the public.

I visited Petworth House on a very wet day and didn't arrive until late so really only had the opporunity to view the house but it was well worth it. A vast and opulent house with rich colours and classical decor on the grandest scale. As with Arundel Castle, a must see for art lovers with works by many famous artists and also beautiful sculptures and other pieces to delight the eye.
How much time an art enthusiast could spend at Petworth House looking at the art alone is anyones guess. There is a shuttle bus to take visitors to the house from the carpark otherwise it is a short walk to the house entrance through the park. A beautiful National Trust property
and another good reason to have a membership card. Highly recommended.
