“Amazing Collection of Artwork”
Reviewed November 5, 2012

We've been a few times over the years, but have never before been just to look at the paintings. I should think it's one of the largest art collections outside a major city in the UK. The room guides were helpful when asked for help, but not pushy. The only downside is that in the gallery where the majority of the paintings and sculpture is housed the lighting is exceedingly gloomy, so it was hard to make out detail in some of the work.

“A house of contrasts”
Reviewed November 5, 2012

Having seen so many photos of teh magnificent west front, and so many television programmes about the house & park, I suppose my expectations were too high. It is a very long walk from the car park to the house & when we arrived the courtesy bus was not running - it did run later in the day. It was a wet day and so the paths were soggy with gluey mud. And the entry front
( which is the back of the house, not through the glorious west front) is an ugly jumble of many different buildings.
The National Trust has done a good job of trying to present a massive house in a coherent way, and has to overcome the many extra - ordinary alterations that previous owners have made. . You enter at the Luggage Door and go through corridors, rather than as in many other houses such as Clandon Park which we had visited the previous day, the original designed entrance. The Picture Gallery houses many dark & gloomy paintings - no doubt when the NT has enough money they will improve the lighting & clean the grimy paintings. I had expected that the famous Petworth Painting of JWM Turner would be bright & colourful, but they a re not.
Having said all that, the NT was doing a splendid job in entertaining many children on a Hallowe'en morning - they were well organised & having a great time - lovely to see young people really enjoying themselves in an unexpected place.
The Sate rooms a re magnificent, the Main Staircase is stunning, the park is beautiful
do go & judge fro your self

“Lovely garden and park - didn't have time to see the house”

Beware dog owners - herd of deer roam freely in the park and don't like being chased! Fabulous coffee shop in the complex.

“A GREAT GREAT house if you love ART and more!!!”
Reviewed October 30, 2012

We are true lovers of the National Trust & wish them only the very best. The reason is because houses such as these are such extreme treasurers. The art work in this house is incredible. The Grand staircase is just beyond words. We are Joseph Mallard William Tuner fans and there are many in this home. The docents were extremely well informed about the items and the history on this property- A must see for all art lovers. This is another one of the National Trust properties that one simply must see many times.
