A well run hotel that is organised around a number of cosy rooms with real fires and live music. We went there for our Christmas lunch, which started with a family portrait in the lobby. Lunch was served in a spacious hallway with a good selection of cold starters and very tasty carvery. The rolled turkey leg was fantastic. The dessert station looked like a scene from a spaghetti western by the time we arrived, and could have been kept looking fresher for a bit longer. We retreated to the lounge to open some presents and have an afternoon tea. Santa was a very friendly man, but he had been wandering around half cut for most of the day and was completely cut by tea time. His beard had slipped to the side of his face, revealing his black hair and I don't remember Santa ever wearing Dennis Norden spectacles, so a little more money spent on authenticity would have gone down well, although he was telling some good jokes. All in all, a very enjoyable day. Clearly, a lot of effort had been made to create a warm and hospitable atmosphere, by people who had given up their own Christmas day to work, but a bit more attention to detail would have made it perfect, and well worth the £104 per head.

Stayed here one night following a business function. Rooms were a good size and the beds were comfortable. Although it was a very cold night outside, we had to turn radiators off and open windows as the heat was stifling. It is also worth noting that the first room we were offered had a bathroom that was open plan to the bedroom.

At dinner, the food was average and although they were catering for large numbers, so some allowances should be made, service was very slow.

Service was also very slow at breakfast and we had to wait a while for a table. After 5 minutes in the breakfast room it became clear that some guests had been waiting for an hour for breakfast and were now walking out in disgust. Other guests were sending cold breakfasts back to the kitchen. By the time we ate however, the room was almost empty and our breakfasts were excellent and the waitress was attentive.

Dear Pippa W,

Thank you for your review of South Lodge. We appreciate all guest feedback, both positive and negative. I am sorry that on this occasion your stay did not meet your expectations.

Each of our 89 bedrooms are beautifully designed; I have made a note of your individual preference for when you are next visiting.

I am surprised you found your bedroom hot. In this freezing weather most of our guests do appreciate a warm and cosy bedroom. If you had let us known, my colleagues would have been delighted to reduce the temperature of the bedroom.

I am disappointed to hear you found the service at your event slow. Catering for 400 persons we were happy with the quality and speed of service. Indeed, this is the first negative feedback we have received of this nature.

Thank you for highlighting the issues with breakfast service. I am sorry for the delay in seating you however I am delighted the quality of the food and service was high.

Once again, thank you for your comments. We do appreciate your thoughts and we hope you will return to us to experience true South Lodge hospitality. I have contacted you directly via email so please do not hesitate to contact me if we can discuss anything further.

Very best wishes,

Mark Surguy

You have to be a driver to access this extremely well maintained centre of excellence. The grounds and the areas's I visited were extremely tidy and well presented. The food was excellent and the staff we had on our table were brilliant. All in all a very pleasant dining experience.

Returned to celebrate our 1st wedding anniversary after getting married at SL last December. One year on and the place is still fantastic and set up for nicely for the Christmas season. The service quality was one of the key reasons we chose SL as our wedding venue and the high service standards remain as good as ever; friendly, helpful and efficient staff and met our excellent wedding co-ordinator for a catch up. We had dinner in the Camellia and the food was very good. A tip....leave room for brekkie as the sausages are the best around!
If any of you readers ever get the chance to spoil yourself, stay in The Monarch, not cheap but it is not only huge but amazing. Our favourite hotel room bar none!

We will return year on year and already looking forward to 2013....

P.s ignore any grumpy reviews....it's great!

Room Tip: Spoil yoursef and stay in The Monarch, or Purity is a great junior suite overlooking the downs...

Dear RJhols,

Happy first anniversary!

Thank you for spending your special date with us and reviewing your stay on TripAdvisor. It is always a pleasure for us to welcome back an ‘Exclusive couple’. The Monarch Suite is one of our best; separate dining and living space, spectacular South Down views and of course the divine bathroom.

We look forward to welcoming you next anniversary, if not before.

All the very best,

I'm very fond of South Lodge, it's a comfortable place to dine with a reasonable selection of fine wine. I have known it to be better though I'm not in the habit of ordering Chateau Lafite. Dominic the Sommelier is an enthusiastic host that acknowledges the whims of the epicure. He knows my feelings about the wine tasting set-up in the cellar, I'm not enamoured. In fact one thing you can definitely say is that ALL their staff are great. They offer a sincere and warm welcome and take the time and care to ensure your satisfaction.

The food can be a little experimental at times in the Camelia Restaurant having reviewed its format over the year but they are improving again toward the standard they had prior to their Michelin Star Chef moving across to The Pass. The Pass is cutting edge food, however the format of the restaurant is not to my liking, being cold, perched and noisy due to the hard surfaces and lack of acoustic damping.

All in all, a quality fine dining experience, noting of course that there is always room for improvement at this end of the spectrum, it's the only way to maintain high standards.

Dear Peter A,

Thank you for taking the time to post your glowing and thorough review of South Lodge.
I will pass your kind words onto Dominic and the rest of the team. We do really appreciate your praise as we put our guests at the heart of everything we do.

We are a foodie’s delight with both The Pass and Camellia restaurants offering exceptional dining experiences. Paired with the wonderful Cellar and Dom’s fabulous wine list we do feel we offer something special to our guests.

On behalf of Dominic and the rest of the team here we look forward to welcoming you back in the not too distant future.

Kindest regards,

My husband and I visited this characterful property for a birthday celebration and from the moment we arrived we felt very welcome; the staff are this hotel's greatest asset! I do not agree with a previous reviewer that 'the romance of the house has long gone' and feel that much of it is still evocative of times gone by.

We loved the contrast of pre-luncheon drinks in the Billiard Bar, with its beautiful ceiling and wood panelling; an amazing lunch in the contemporary setting of The Pass (see separate restaurant review), and finally settling in the old fashioned lounge (with its exceedingly comfortable sofas and armchairs) for coffee & petits fours for the remainder of the afternoon.

As we were interested in celebrating a special occasion here next year, we asked if we might have a short tour of the building and the concierge was more than happy to oblige. Some of the rooms had wonderful views over the surrounding countryside and lake, and even their own patio. The sunny drawing room was beautifully laid out for afternoon tea (which is a particular favourite of ours) and we loved the clever conversion of 'The Cellar' offering wine-tasting with cheeses and charcuterie.

The town of Arundel, with its antique shops and eateries is close by, and in the summer months the resort of Littlehampton offers a wonderful sandy beach and walks along the promenade to a boating lake.

We arrived late on a Friday evening and were welcomed warmly from the car by a smiling member of the concierge team (Richard). Although not in attire one would usually don for five star ocassions (my partner having cycled to work that morning) we were treated with great care and whisked upstairs to a wonderful bedroom with a bathroom fit for a king, complete with large free standing bath and magnificent shower. We came with no dinner plans and due to our late arrival opted for room service, where a requested menu from the restaurant was provided with no hassle and off piste ordering accommodated with no fuss. A quiet night's sleep is what we came for and that we got - thick and heavy curtains and solid walls, then to wake up to a view over the private gardens and on to the south downs was a welcome surprise. The breakfast buffet was abundant and again, although late downstairs just minutes before the 10am breakfast cut off, we were not rushed at all, the service was excellent. Five star to me means the ability to have what you want and when you want it - no guilt, that is what we received! Thank you!
