“A brilliant Experience!”
Reviewed December 31, 2012 via mobile

Every year between Christmas and New Year, our family chooses a restaurant for our annual gastronomic treat. After much research, and with some great establishments to live up to, I chose The Pass this year. We weren't disappointed!

The atmosphere is electric - akin to watching a live show. You're in the midst of the hotel kitchen, not just the one for The Pass but also for the hotel's other restaurant, Camelia. It was fantastic to watch our dishes being prepared and plated up just feet away. The head chef presented most of our dishes himself (Gordon Ramsay et al - take note!). He even scrubbed down the kitchen after service with his staff! Excellent teamwork.

We opted for the 8 course Pass Experience. Every dish was superbly designed and presented (I'll be adding photos). Maybe one or two of the dishes didn't quite hit the mark but that's down to personal taste rather than effort and ingenuity. The stand-out dishes for us were the quails eggs, the crab salad and the chocolate fondant.

The service was exceptional. They accommodated my aversion to fish and the waiters explained every dish and answered all our questions. The somelier was also excellent and tended to us very well.

In all, we'd highly recommend The Pass for some extraordinary culinary theatre. This will be hard to beat next year! Thank you for a wonderful evening.

“Heaven on a plate.”
Reviewed December 24, 2012

My husband took me to lunch with my daughter for a special birthday treat yesterday It was our first visit and a very memorable experience.
From the moment we walked in the door until we left about four hours later we were treated with first class service. The food created by Matt Gillan and his team was absolutely wonderful, the resting time between courses was, perfect and nothing was too much trouble for any of the staff, I was wary at first about being able to see what was going on in the kitchen, (having worked in a restaurant once myself) but the atmosphere and peacefulness were, so relaxing.
Our day had a happy ending when Matt came and spent some time with us at the end of our meal.
Would certainly recommend THE PASS in fact, we can't wait to go back.

“A bit disappointing”
Reviewed December 23, 2012

The Pass is set in a fine country house hotel and is definitely a departure from the traditional style of dining room, with open plan setting, cooking activities on view and diners perched on high stools. Wimpy however, got there first!
The staff were helpful and knowledgeable and obviously believed in their product but I have to say that although the food was attractively presented, with great variety in colour and texture, there was precious little in the way of flavour (neither my partner or I had colds!)
There were a couple of exceptions to this, the canapes were super, as was an altogether splendid little caramel and lemon posset, but over-all, we did not have a terrific experience.
We live quite locally, so perhaps we'll give this another try sometime as I'd hate to write it off , and I must say I have great faith in the judgement of the Michelin bunch!

“A real treat”
Reviewed December 22, 2012

We have been wanting to dine at the Pass for quite some time as it has had so many rave reviews. It was a wonderful evening. The service was fast class, the sommelier spent time describing each of the wines we had. There were 7 wines, one for each course. The wines were each a perfect match for the course. The chefs were on hand to answer any questions and really seemed to enjoy passing on their tips and tricks. The food was excellent. Each course combined a variety of flavours and textures. We had the 6 course menu and this was perfectly balanced . The location of the tables, adjacent to the kitchen was interesting. The quite professional way in which the food was prepared was such a contrast too what you see on TV chef programmes. It is certainly an expensive meal, but for a treat, worth every penny.

“Disappointing. Emulating Heston but failing.”
Reviewed December 20, 2012

We went as a party of six and were disappointed overall by the food. We really love our food and rate that first and foremost above ambience. As a general rule we have enjoyed food at our local michellin restaurants in Devon such as Gidleigh, the Mason Arms and really loved our meals at the fat duck in Bray and Nathan Outlaws fabulous restaurant in Rock. I state this not to boast but just to point out that we really like to try a lot of food. The point is we did not get this restaurant. The food was experimental but in our opinion was too many tastes which did not blend and meld togrther. The restaurant was cold and noisy and felt like an American diner. I cannot not understand how and why it achieved a michellin star. The staff in the hotel were very pleasant but we shall not return. We dined at Ockenden Manor a week later and while it is more traditionally French in flavour and style, as food goes the tastes and substances blended far better. I cannot rber any of the food apart fr the crab salad at the pass reataurAnt but would reccomend the oysters filled by the sea bass and the Mille feuille for desert. Very much a home from home with a great cosy atmosphere.
