“Superb food spoilt by the Jazz being too loud.”
Reviewed October 8, 2012

OK, we knew it was going to be a Jazz night - but previous ones haven't taken over the dining room to such an extent.
We were offered a table where the keyboard player could have reached out and eaten with us. My friends hearing aides went into melt down so we, on pressure from myself, were finally moved to a table somewhat further into the room.
Perhaps the musicians should have their volume reduced / play in the lobby?
It was still very loud and made conversation difficult / our volume increase.
No criticism on the food though. Wonderful as ever.

“Awesome food but stuffy service and poor ambience”
Reviewed October 3, 2012

If you want some of the best food in Sussex, then you should surely visit this place if you are able to put up with long waits, miserable staff and a poor ambience. One hour to get starter at lunch time is not ideal particularly when the restaurant was not even half full. main course came relatively soon afterwards at least, but considering it was lunchtime we skipped dessert to try and get out of there with some of our day left.

If they can improve the demeanour of the staff and maybe play some soft music or something in the background, then I agree that this place should keep its high rating.

Maybe everyone was having a bad day that day and after spoiling my birthday lunch I certainly was too!

“Memorable lunch for 40”
Reviewed September 25, 2012

Champagne and canapés on the terrace made a good start to our celebrations. We had booked the main restaurant for lunch for a special occasion, were given a very good choice for each course and finished with coffee in the marquee. The food, champagne and the house wines were all very good as was the service and the general ambience of the restaurant in it's own walled garden

“Dinner out”
Reviewed September 7, 2012

The restauarant was very pleasant. Food was OK - lamb was a bit on the tough side and under cooked. More staff training is definitely needed as you don't stretch across other diners to serve another person. Staff were pleasant enough. Nice location.
