Love the Ocean Hotel & Spa at Butlins Bognor Regis. Always clean and welcoming. A real plus to the overall Butlins experience.

“Hotels great, other accomodation poor”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 26, 2012

We stayed in the Shoreline hotel for a 3 night break with our two small children. The hotel is lovely and the others are even better than this one. Everyone (i believe) gets a sea-view and you can even hear the waves if you leave the window open. However I wouldn't want to stay in the non-hotel accommodation as it seems a bit chavvy. It's worth paying a bit more to stay in one of the hotels. Or go to the Minehead resort and stay in one of the bungalows there. The minehead resort is on a bigger scale to Bognor. However the staff at the Bognor resort were great. especially those working on the kids indoor playground. They would tickle the children as the ride passed and it was obvious that the staff actually like children. At the Minehead resort the staff were pleasant but obviously only doing a job and they wouldn't engage with you or the kids. One female member of staff at the Minehead resort made the kids wait on the plane ride (whilst most of them were crying) for about 10 minutes before she actually started it. Most of the parents wanted to remove their children but couldn't.

“Butlins - You Never Fail to Disappoint Me”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 10, 2012

My husband and myself with my sister stayed at Butlins last year from 31st October for the Halloween package (4 nights). We stayed in the Silver accommodation and upgraded to premium dining. The accommodation consisted of 1 double, 1 twin, 1 shower and 2 toilets. Our dining was in the Yacht Club where we experienced really good cuisine, great seating and we were spoilt for choice of food. Based on the food at the Yacht club mainly we booked up again for this year, from 5th November until 9th November. We had booked again Silver accommodation with upgrading of the food to premium dining. When we arrived at the booking location we were informed that we had been upgraded? Upon arriving at our room we discovered we had only 1 toilet instead of 2 amongst 3 adults but instead had been given a small sofa and a fridge which was of no use to us. It would seem that they did not upgrade us for our sakes but theirs, so that they could put all their guests in the same location instead of having to heat and get ready their other rooms. After unpacking we decided to check out the Yacht club near the time of our dining hour but found that the Yacht Club was in darkness with nobody inside. We decided to go back to the booking reception and ask what time the Yacht Club opened. We were informed that they had decided not to open the Yacht club and that everybody would be using ‘The Deck’ to which we informed the lady had plastic chairs and was not the standard of the Yacht Club which we had paid for. The lady informed us that the Deck was still premium dining!! Anyway we arrived at the Deck at 4pm which was the time we were given on the information leaflet which we were given when we arrived to find the doors locked. We looked at the leaflet on the door and it said that the doors would not open until 4.30 so we and quite a few people had to wait in the cold until 4.30. The temperature was about 4 degrees. We made to a free table and then went to see what was on offer. After a little while and several sample dishes later we came to the conclusion that the food being served was either undercooked, overcooked or watery i.e the soup was more water than ingredients, the custard tasted like it was made with water, the rolls were few and hard, there was never any mash, the potatoes were bruised and black in places, only 2 veg which were cooked too much and had no flavour. The other food i.e. fish and chips looked disgusting. The cheese was dry and very substandard and the biscuits were old. The only thing that first night which was good was the cappuccino and the ice cream (both of which came from a machine and cannot be interfered with). We then went to see the Firework display which was amazing, then back to our room for sleep!!!! We stayed upstairs and had people either side of us. I know the walls are thin but it was unbearable on the first night. The people one side arrived back about 10.30 and started slamming the doors and throwing Pappa John boxes outside our door and screaming. Then the other people arrived back at midnight with a small child and proceeded to slam their doors and have the tv on until the early hours. We could not go to sleep until they had gone to sleep.

The next morning we woke to go and have breakfast. Again on our leaflet it said breakfast at 8am but upon arriving, the door was locked and the information on the door said “breakfast at 8.30” so again we had to wait 30 mins. There was thick frost and ice on the floor and people were queueing outside with their children in the cold. When we went inside, off we went in search of food. Unfortunately substandard food again i.e. horrible tasting milk, porridge made with water, toast which was really bread shown to the toaster, fresh fruit which was tinned, not fresh, scrambled egg was floating in water, bacon was ridiculously salty and floating in fat, hash browns which were made with nothing we can think of, sausages were made with mush no beef/pork, we have no idea again what they were made of. Time and time again we took some of the food back to our table, tasted it and then put it to one side to try and find something else to eat. After a while we gave up and decided to leave and outside people were lining up to come in. They were from the Wave Hotel opposite and it seemed they stayed in the Hotel but had to come across the path to our restaurant to get their food. Can you imagine paying their hotel prices and then having to come outside their hotel in the cold and wet to line up for their food !!!!

Our second evening meal was still no good. On the roast side there was pork. The pork was blood red on the outside. The chicken was either overcooked and dry or it was undercooked and pink, potatoes were bruised and black. We saw the first peas and carrots. When we first arrived for our meal there was only 2 chocolate trifles and once they went they were not replaced with anymore. I can only assume that they were from the day before. There were hardly any rolls left and those which were there were hard and stale. The cheese was dry and crumbly and the biscuits were stale. We left there at 6.30 to see other people trying to come in and there was hardly any food left for them. We went to the fairground after this meal to find it closed although all the lights were on.

On day four breakfast was just as bad as was our stomachs by the end of this holiday. In the evening though things seemed to have taken a turn for the better. There was beef on offer which was fantastic, GOOD roast potatoes, loads of different veg, loads of desserts which were replenished. This food was of the same standard that the Yacht club had last year. Whilst I was deciding what food to have I personally saw two ladies dressed in suits wandering round with a Butlins Manager and they had clipboards. Were these two ladies Food Inspectors !!!!!!! you make your minds up. Food rubbish until they turn up and then we have fantastic food!!!!! Until the next morning.

Next morning breakfast was substandard again. My husband tried the porridge which was clearly made with water and was so lumpy, one lump was nearly the size of a golf ball. He then tried the supposed fresh fruit but it was evident that this was from a tin, not fresh. He then tried some strawberry yoghurt which was almost water and had no strawberries in it. Don’t know what manufacturer Butlins is using. The Danish pastries were tasteless so all in all we left on Friday with upset stomachs and still hungry.

On conclusion I do not know what suppliers Butlins are using but they need to change them. Don’t overcook the veg, buy better ingredients and DON’T water the food down. Also besides upsetting our stomachs I think we had our full quota of salt in one sitting that we should have in 1 week. Butlins seriously affected our health.

Now the entertainment is fantastic for kids but again nothing is on offer for people over 50. We are not interested in the Skyline group (although they do a fantastic job) and are not interested in spending our hard earned money on the only thing for us (slot machines or drink). We tried once going to the ‘Centre Stage’ which is supposed to be for the family and were informed that there were 2 acts, 1 was a dance group which consisted of young girls and boys dancing. With these dancers was a rapper which we do not think is entertainment and not for us so left after 20 mins.

Why does Butlins not interact with the guests anymore I do not know. It seems they are only too pleased to meet and greet you, give you your room cards and then that’s it, you are left to your own devices. Nobody checks how you are doing, is there anything they can help with, nothing, unlike the old days. They are not even in attendance to say goodbye. The Redcoats just walked past us and did not attempt to interact with us. Where has the courtesy gone ? My husband was a Butlins Beaver in the 50/60’s and he loved it and went every year to various Butlins locations but now we will NEVER be returning to any locations and will advise family and friends to stay away.

With the aging population Butlins are missing out on a very lucrative section of the population. Make the food better, more interaction with the guests and more entertainment for the older generation but as stated before we will never be returning. I know there are great reviews for Bognor Regis but I do not know where they people were staying, as its not the Butlins I recently encountered.

The decision is yours but I would definitely not recommend any Butlins for those over 50 wanting decent, pleasant, quiet, good eating experiences without cigarette butts everywhere and people drinking too much.

Last note, we spoke to quite a few other guests of our age and they too will not be returning. Butlins your future is in your hands. What would Billy Butlins make of it all !!!!

“What fabulous value for money”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 8, 2012

Arrived back on Monday from a fab Halloween and Firework weekend at Butlins, Bognor Regis. Clean accommodation comfy beds, quality bed linen. Tea facilities in the room, heating etc.
Entertainment non stop for the kids, great shows kids loved skyline gang and Titan the robot was just amazing. There is no need to spend money on any extras unless of course you want to. Every single member of staff from the entertainment team to the security guard on the way out were incredibly friendly. The kids can't wait to go again.
We ate at the Coral Food Court and the food was exceptional. Roast dinners on the menu every night. Great roast potatoes, gravy and the sponge puddings and custard were just the best. Cooked breakfasts in the morning were scrummy no cheap sausage, sauces or beans...just no good for the waistline. Haven't stopped telling everyone about it since we've been back.
