We were very much looking forward to enjoying a meal at this newly (and very expensively) refurbished old coaching inn, as we'd heard many positive reviews from friends since it recently reopened.
The refurbishment itself is absolutely first-class: really tasteful and funky - a breath of fresh air in this town!
The menu on offer was reasonably unexciting, but well-executed: one of our party had fish and chips, for example, and pronounced it the best he'd eaten for years.
One or two minor quibbles: there were no specials on offer (despite being referenced on the website); in fact, not all of the dishes listed on the website menu were available, which seems odd on a busy Friday night! When we queried this, the waiter explained that that they reduced the menu on busy (weekend) nights -which seems a little daft to be frank!
We found the staff to be extremely friendly and helpful but to be honest, a little overstretched: we waited quite a long time at the bar to be served and generally got the impression that the place was understaffed. This seems to be a particularly British issue, but one that could be easily rectified by Brakspear.
On the whole we were very impressed: this is an attractive and fun venue and has certainly livened up the dining scene in this town: we will certainly be going back for more.More
