Stayed overnight for a wedding, and outside of the wedding photos and reception, much of the rest was at Fawlty Towers standard:
Check-in was supposed to be at 2pm, but when I tried to check in after 3 pm the receptionist conducted a telephone negotiation with Housekeeping about when our room would be available, which culminated in her (desperately saying) "well, take a guess". Once in our pleasant room in the stable block, we realised that there was only one bath towel (despite having booked, and in the computer, as a couple)

In the evening, the bar offerd the slowest service in the developed world - and at £7.30 for a glass of wine, I think more staff could have been mustered to move things along.

However, the worst was left for breakfast - when at 9.30am there was nowhere to sit as nothing seemed to have been cleared in the Dining Room from any of the previous guests - and the cereal and hot food buffet was out of much of the expected food as it hadn't been replenished. Having had to ask a couple of times for coffee from the clearly over-worked and sullen staff made the whole experience very disappointing.

Actually, my major memory of my friend's wedding was this truly dreadful comedy of the worst hospitality I've seen for quite a while. I had asked for the manager to contact me before check-out (so as to avoid a "fuss" in a public area )- but guess-what - no-one bothered.

If you do get invited for a wedding at Brownsover - stay at the Holiday Inn Express which is a couple of hundred yards away - at least you'll get a straightforward hotel experience.

We were staying for a wedding and after reading reviews on here didn't expect too much.
However, we were in the main building (room 1) and it was excellent.
A clean, tasteful room with nice views over the beautiful grounds and it had all the amenities you might expect from a 4* (apart from no gym or the like on site, but it does give free membership to a nearby facility).
The wedding meal was pretty good - not outstanding or memorable, but the sort of thing you'd be happy to pay for in a restaurant.
The bar is, of course, stupidly overpriced but it was nice enough, though the staff were slow.
Breakfast was very good with a range of hot and cold food, though the huge number of people meant some hot food was lukewarm by the time some guests got it.
Some guests stayed in superior rooms in the external stable block and had a few problems with their rooms, including no light in the bathroom of one! The suite is a living room, then a steep staircase which is about 8 inches wide leading to a small bedroom and bathroom. Give it a miss. Our cheaper standard room was bigger and nicer so the advice is to book a standard and enjoy.

Stayed at the hotel for one night. The hotel is an interesting old building with great features and makes a change from faceless chain hotels. The bedroom (room 26) I was given was an excellent size and well decorated. The only critisism I would have is of the bathroom it look 10 minutes to get hot water for my shower. Would stay there again.

Bookings were made by my company as I attended a number of training courses.
I can confirm that there are lots of weddings - marquees were continually being dis/mantled - why don't they just keep them up and save wedding couples a lot of money/
Summary of complaintes -
- I was electrocuted in 1 room by the TV. The Manager - a German - was not interested. Despite bruising on the arm and stomach - where the circuit was completed, the hotel claimed it must have been static!!
- it is possible to see into one of the rooms in the stable block as it has been 'designed' in such a way that the windowes do not fully cover the glass.
- a colleague barely ate for a week as they could not / would not provide a vegetarian menu, despite being asked in advance
- one room had electric cables in the bathroom and an electric socket; I 'inherited' a half-eaten packet of biscuits which was not cleared away all week. I have pictures.
- beware of falling masonry; little external maintenance appears to be carried out judging by the piles lying around
etc, etc

Rooms:
I have stayed in standard rooms in the main building and both executive rooms and suites in the converted stables. All rooms are of a very good size in both the main building and stables and decorated to a good standard. The bathrooms appear to be clean and also of a good standard. The temprature in the rooms was good for this time of year, however the bedroom area in the split level suite was warm, while the downstairs area much cooler and draft while sat at the table working from the adjacent door.

Stayed in a downstairs stables room, but the wireless broadband singnal doesn' work on teh ground floor. I was moved to a room where the wireless signal worked fine.

Restaurant/Bar/Room Service:
The service in the restaurant and bar on the one occasion I ate there was poor. They take your order int eh bar area and then move you through to the dining area. The starter arrived promptly, however the main course took considerably longer to arrive than expected. In addition, placing drinks orders also took a long time with the staff not being attentive in teh slightest. I ordered some dessert wine to come at the same time as the dessert, however this was forgotten and when I inquired they took ten minutes to search the cellar only to inform me that there was none left. The service should have been more efficient.

Room service is pretty much hit and miss on the time to get the food out, can take as long as 50 minutes on occassions.

The standard of food in both the restaurant and room service is better than average, I've eaten much worse in three star hotels.

General:
An average hotel with spacious rooms of a good standard, need some work ont eh restaurant/bar service. Would recommend this hotel for business travellers and holiday makers alike.
