“Very comfortable, homely family run hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 21, 2009

We have just spent a very comfortable stay in this family run hotel. The room was comfortable and well appointed and the food in the restaurant was excellent. After a day's work, it was the perfect place to which to return for a delicious meal and a good night's sleep.

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this hotel. This place offers great value for money. You cannot go wrong with a hotel room of this standard for under fifty pounds. In the evening the lounge and bar has a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. The staff couldn't have been more helpful and attentive. We had not booked a room to include breakfast so this was extra (£5). I had no quarrels in paying for this as the quality of the Full English was second to none - freshly prepared (not sitting on a hot plate for an hour!). We had proper butcher sausages and bacon, which were absolutely yummy and something you rarely come across in ‘big’ hotels. Would certainly stay again and recommend.

We booked for 2 nights (Friday and Saturday). booked by telephone a couple of weeks earlier and booked bed and breakfast. When we arrived to check in, we were asked if we wanted a cooked breakfast. I suggested that we had already booked breakfast, but was told by the receptionist (there is no reception so you book in at the bar), that the included breakfast is continental only and a cooked breakfast is £5 extra per person per night, which I grudgingly agreed to pay. I was then surprisngly asked what time would I be having breakfast. I asked what my choice was and she said between 8 and 10. I said that I would therefore be having breakfast some time between 8 and 10!
The room was fine, very light and airy. Quite small and only one chair. Tiny TV set and shower cubicle only, no bath.
We had pre-booked the restaurant for the Friday evening where we would dine with 2 friends. We arrived at the restaurant at 8.30 as booked, expecting it to be lively and we were the only people in. There is no menu on the table, just a big blackboard with a variety of dishes on it, plus a carvery. The heat lamps from the carvery are very bright and very annoying so we moved table into the corner to hide from the glare. Food was good and well priced, although not much choice for vegetarians. We asked for further vegetarian options which there were, but not on the board. A further 2 people also dined that night, so as you can imagine the atmosphere was a bit subdued. Even though all of the carvery vegetables were available, just for me!
We went to breakfast on the saturday morning around 9.15. The fire door at the top of the stairs was blocked open with a fire extinguisher (criminal), which I moved. In the restaurant, the table where we sitting the previous evening still had the empy beer bottle, coffee cup and other remnants of our meal. I asked the man serving breakfast, if that table had not been cleared from the night before. "I'm not sure he replied.". Well I assured him that it hadn't as we were sitting there. "They must have gone home early", he added, "they left washing up in the sink too!". We were asked if we were cooked or continental?, "Cooked please, one vegetarian," we replied, "oh dear" was the answer. We asked for some scambled egg and baked beans, which was freshly cooked and ok. We were not asked what we would like on the full English, type of eggs etc. It just arrived and was awful. Greasy, hash browns were sodden and sausages, suspicious. Inedible.
Another couple arrived for breakfast. same question was asked, "English or Continental?" "English", was the reply. A few minutes later. Mein Host returned and asked thier room number, "Number 8." "Oh dear", was the reply, you've not paid for an English breakfast. "We wern't told at check in." they retorted. "Well you can't have one," said Mein Host!" "Can we have one tomorrow?" asked the guest. "If you pay for it!" was the reply.
Second morning - Breakfast better. Fire door on stairs blocked open.
