“no towels, no porridge, no sleep, not again!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 28, 2011

On arrival to the chase hotel it looks ok from the outside, however this is very deceiving. On arrival to check in there was no hotel staff to check me in. I found myself searching around the hotel for staff, like a game of hiding seek. The rooms are in need of updating the shower is the noisiest i have ever heard ear plugs are a must. There is a towel shortage at the hotel if you require one you have to walk in the bar lounge and ask for one.Its impossible to get a decent nights sleep with the adjoining bedroom walls being so thin. When arriving at the restaurant for breakfast we had to wait 15 - 20 mins to be served.I ordered a porridge and waited another 10 mins to then be told that they have run out. Shocking service all round I've had more comfortable stays in an Iraq prison camp.Wouldn't stay here if you paid me.

Ok so here goes, First thing you will notice about the Chase is you can't actualy check in as the Reception area seems to be a well kept secret hidden from the staff!
Second thing is there does not appear to be walls in this hotel and merely just wallpaper separating the rooms as i was rudely awaken by my neighbour stirring his tea!
Ok so you have now checked in and had an appalling nights sleep mainly due to your neighbours caffeine addiction and decide to jump in the rolls royce jet engine propelled shower to blast away the cobwebs only to jump out and find no towels leaving you with no option but to dry yourself with yesterday ankle socks!
Well your now dry and thinking oh well a nice breakfast to set me up for the day "WRONG" The staff are all very nice at breakfast they all smile wave and great you with good morning every day however it would seem they are a little on the hesitant side to take your order and can take up to 20 mins to be served which i found strange as i was the only person sitting in the breakfast lounge bearing in mind the hotel was full? Ok so stir the tea socks waiting and breakfast is on the table or should i say there is a plate with something on it on the table! Report there is something strange not resembling bacon on my plate to be granted with an honest reply of yeah that dont look good i'll bin that for ya £8 thank you sir have a nice day.
Ok so i guess you want to know if i would reckomend the chase? That answer would be unless you are an anorexic insomniac with an allergy to water the answer would be hell no!

We only ate in the bar/restaurant area (I couldn't see a way to comment on just the food and not hotel stay). Restaurant was fairly quiet but I had to wait ages to be served a drink (bar managers chatting with each other) while customers were waiting. I ended up being served by the duty manager.

My main gripe - we ordered meals separately, but at the same time as paid separately (gave same table number) . My friends meal came out fairly quickly, but I was left waiting 15 mins before we had to ask a waitress where my order was. She was lovely and did apologise but I just couldn't get over the fact managers were hanging around.

The staff seemed un-interested and very bored. I have to comment on the level of unprofessionalism of the duty manager and 2 other members of male staff she was talking to. They were not in black uniforms so I guess they were managers. They just loitered around discussing other staff members saying things like "yeah I got rid of him...told him not to come back" and they just stood there while the waitresses ran around.

At one point they were loitering around the area where food orders were being taken and customers were waiting behind them - they didn't appear to help at all, just stood there. The way the duty manager spoke to a customer "I told you last time you couldn't do this" when it came to him exchanging a voucher - I would've walked out. She was plain rude - whatever the circumstance - he was a customer - trying his luck or not -she was rude and abrupt.

Bonus point if you can get ANY manager to smile. I tried several times and I was looked at like I was trying to run off without paying....

No-one in reception, had to go into the restaurant to find someone. Gave us a choice of rooms. Bed comfortable but room very sad and badly needed an upgrade. Shower must be the noisiest I have ever heard. Paid £40 for the room and thought we had been overpriced. Hotel looks good in photos but a bit of a reality check when you go round the back to accommodation.

A party of us ordered dinner at 8.20 pm. The starters were satisfactory. The main courses were served after 9 pm; the content was good, although the extra eggs were missing from the mixed grills. That wasn't a problem but the waiter said nothing could be done because the grills had been turned off. When we tasted the food, apart from the chips on two dinners, all the food was cold. None of the staff appeared interested; they weren’t unpleasant, just not interested. I informed three members of staff without so much as an apology, just a shrug of the shoulders. We spent £120 for a meal I considered to be very substandard. It’s my guess the kitchen staff prepared the main courses at the same time as the starters, switched of the grills and went home, leaving them to be served cold to unsuspecting customers. Rating, zero.

This hotel is ideally located within walking distance of the town centre and railway stations, which happily eradicates the need for taxis. However for £59 a night in a very small hotel you would usually expect a spacious room. This was not so. Upon entering the room you almost walk directly into the bed as the rooms and bathrooms are very small. However although a disappointing size, it was clean and proved to be comfortable enough for one night stay. Bed was comfortable and there was plenty of storage facilities plus a hairdryer. However parked outside the hotel was an ominous Rentokil van (not the most pleasant greeting) yet thankfully our room contained no unwanted guests. As we used the room only as a base for a few hours sleep after a night out it met our needs perfectly. However if you intend to spend longer here I would advise against it, as you are likely to feel too confined.

We stayed in this hotel on a weekend trip to see family. As a result all we did was sleep here, arriving quite late in the evening and not going down for breakfast. The rooms were an adequate size and nicely furnished, albeit with slightly outdated cupboards. Beds were reasonably comfortable, and certainly better than some 4* places I have stayed recently! Shower rooms were small, well, tiny actually, but clean with new fittings. Be warned though, the showers are electric, not mains, so are quite noisy and you can clearly hear the showers in adjacent rooms. It seems that all the room rates quoted are on room only basis so breakfast is an extra £5-8 each. We didnt go for this so cannot comment on the quality. Staff were polite, but as others have said, reception is not staffed so you do have to find someone to help. All in all, for the price we had comfy rooms, in a convenient location and it was very good value for money.
