“Ideal Cotswold inn.”

Our fourth visit in mid-Jan 2013 was as enjoyable as all the previous. Set in a typically attractive Cotswold village, The Howard Arms' bar and excellent restaurant are warm and welcoming, with a cheery log fire in the bar and exposed old beams and timbers throughout.

The bedrooms are spacious, well-equipped and spotlessly clean; the beds are so comfortable. Chilled milk and mineral waters are provided daily.

All the staff are particularly attentive, efficient and most welcoming.

Room Tip: There are traditionally furnished bedrooms in the original building and, in a new-build section, sev...

A wonderful place, this was my second visit to The Howard Arms and there will certainly be a third as soon as possible! Stunning rooms, great food, and lovely staff. Specifically Emma (General Manager), and Robbie couldn't be more helpful, hospitable and welcoming. A beautifully cosy, typically English inn. Great ale and reasonably priced food/drink. Looking forward to the third visit soon!

Called in on Christmas Day with my elderley father who lives in the village and he wanted a pre Christmas meal drink, I didn't think we would get a table as they were fully booked for lunch. The manageress found a table for him to sit at and despite a very busy lunch sitting the staff were very attentative and looked after us extremely well, a great establishment with excellent staff. I often call in after shooting in the area and it is always a pleasure to sit by the roaring log fire and enjoy a drink.

Room Tip: Didn't stop overnight but hope to one day

We visited for our fourth time on Boxing Day for lunch and had luckily reserved a table in the bar. The staff were friendly, efficient and the attention to detail was excellent even though they were at their busiest. We love this pub as it's dog friendly in the bar and our two dogs were welcomed with a bowl of water and chews before we'd even had a chance to sit down so we were very impressed with the service. The menu is fantastic, such good choice and changes with the seasons. Food arrived in very quick time but was obviously hand made and very good portion sizes. Would highly recommend this pub for a meal.

First class pub to stay in made by the staff, room, food & drink. Cannot fault any aspect of our stay as was made welcome from the moment we arrived and throughout the 3 nights we stayed, especially by Romy at the bar. Food really good and the room was extremely comfortable (Cotswolds Room). Certainly would return.

Room Tip: Some rooms look restricted in height but at 6' 5'' I had plenty of room to move about wi...

There was a slight mix up over our rooms, which I don't think was handled particularly well, but apart from that we had a delightful stay. Our bedroom was well decorated, the bath had plenty of hot water and the bed was very comfortable. The ceiling sloped so tall guests may be better staying in a ground floor bedroom. We ate in the restaurant Saturday night - the food was very good - and the Sunday breakfast was just right being freshly cooked and not a greasy heap on the plate. Having planned to eat elsewhere for Sunday lunch, we ended up at the Howard Arms again because the food was so good.
It would have been good to have some more comfortable seats in the bar so we could relax before and after supper, but that really is my only criticism.

We dine out 4 - 6 times a month, and as a party of four we ate at the Howard Arms last week, our second visit in recent times and as before we were a little under-whelmed. With three non-meat eaters it would have been helpful to have the vegetarian options marked on the menu - none were and on inquiring we found that the french onion soup was made with meat stock.

As the sole carnivore I chose the soup which can only be described as poor, verging on insipid and it was returned uneaten. The cheese souffle starter was just two mouthfuls, a little bland and under-seasoned. Other parts of the meal were good, especially the deserts but unfortunately the duck breast that was ordered pink arrived over-cooked.

Service was slow, and a little haphazard in that not all the dishes arrived at the same time. The two young waitresses seemed over-stretched and lacking in leadership - no sign of senior management all evening. Although I complained about the soup, there was no response from the kitchen or senior front of house staff (if there were any) and no deduction was made to our bill.

Neither from front of house, or in the food we received from the kitchen did we feel that our custom was really valued, add in the hefty bill for what was essentially pub food and three stars is generous I think.
