“Stayed over for Sir Tom Jones concert at Durham”
Reviewed July 15, 2012

I would recommend this hotel, for both business and leisure, the rooms are clean and well equipped, the staff are very friendly and helpful. Breakfast is good but a bit pricey adding over 20 GBP for 2 people on final bill.
(Message to the hotel maintenance team), invest in some WD40 for your door hinges. Our bathroom door hinges creaked like a banshee (as did the doors in the bar area).

Room Tip: ask for a room not overlooking the A1 motorway can imagine it being a bit noisy if you wanted to ope...

The building is a reminder of the 1960/70's style square brick blocks. The usual good welcome, but this is the first time, I have booked in and not been upgrade (platinum - almost gaurantees) and on the second occasion the following week I had to ask, it should be 'almost' automatic. The rooms are no more than what you expect, nice pillow selection etc. the executive room has a massive tv, OTT, and the mini bar was huge, not very cold and empty and there was no storage space for clothes. The mars bar and water is a nice touch as is the welcome bag (twix, wtaer and crisps. The conceige coffee on a Friday morning a good send off, however, I decided to go north and stay at the holiday inn north of Newcastle, swimming pool and seems a nicer place - more next week. One tip the Toby Carvery near build massive meal for under £10 - worth every penny

Dear Reviewer

Thank you for taking the time to complete your review on TripAdvisor. I was pleased to note your positive comments about your Priority Club Goodie Bag on arrival and the Exec Room extras.

I am sorry we were not able to offer an upgrade automatically on your stays - our Executive Rooms are in high demand and we always have more potential Platinum guests than upgrades available.

I hope we are able to welcome you back again in the near future.

Yours sincerely

I have stayed at this hotel a number of times in the last six months and it to be a nice comfy hotel to stay in. Lots of parking space and close to a number of attractions such as the Beamish Centre and only eight miles from Newcastle city centre. The rooms are not over large but have comfy beds, all rooms have a 32 inch large screen tv and all the bits and pieces you would expect from a good hotel. Food is good but not cheap £13.95 for a full English is a bit expensive. The staff are very good and make the hotel a pleasant place to be. There are couple of other hotels next to the Holiday Inn which are a bit cheaper but remember you only get what you pay for. Hope this review helps.

Dear Reviewer

Thank you very much for taking the time to complete your recent TripAdvisor review.

I was pleased to hear that we tick lots of boxes for your hotel needs, especially relating to the friendliness of the team.

For future reference if you are staying again and haven't booked on a breakfast inclusive rate it is cheaper to buy a voucher the night before from the Front Desk for breakfast.

We look forward to welcoming you back to Holiday Inn Washington.

I stayed at this hotel for business. It was efficient, clean but the service was fantastic. I ate in the restaurant where the food was very good. The service, from the Front Desk to the restaurant was excellent. The Manager helped me with a query and again was excellent. Well done.

Room Tip: Choose a room on the higher floors

We were on a group booking, therefore, we did not choose the hotel ourselves as it was part of the package. Our check in was handled quickly and efficiently. The room was ok, slightly noisy due to traffic as the windows did not close fully. Been in worse, been in better! We ate really early due to going to a concert, the food was below average but you do expect this when they are catering for a large group. What we didn't expect was having to wait for over 30 mins at the bar to get served once we returned from the concert. The management obviously knew the time table of things, but had not prepared enough staff to cover. There was also a wedding party in, plus 4 other coaches, so they knew at the end of the night they would get really busy. I ended up clearing tables to try and speed things up, to no avail. The breakfast was self service so slightly cold but a good variety. I would suggest if you are going to this hotel you check how many other guests will be there, and if really busy, go elsewhere.

Dear Reviewer

Many thanks for taking the time to share your recent experience on TripAdvisor. I was of course disappointed to read about the apparent shortfalls in our normally high standards of food and service and have shared these concerns with our Food & Beverage team so as to avoid any future such issues.

Rest assured your constructive feedback will be used to improve things moving forwards. If you would like to discuss your stay with me personally then please feel free to contact me at the hotel on 0191 418 9400.

Before our arrival we asked if,because of a pregnant member of the party and long journey it would be possible to have an early check-in. On arrival it was extremely apparent that they were very stretched for staff and unfortunately our room wasn't ready. As it transpired, the hotel had full occupancy on the previous evening and the staff were indeed extremely stretched with the demand. Despite this, our party were dealt with quickly, efficiently and a room was ready for us within 15 minutes of arrival. There was no faltering in their professional service, our room was clean, the room was quiet despite being close to the busy road and I'm happy to say that we would definately stay at Holiday Inn Washington again. Special thanks to the reception and housekeeping staff for going out of their way for us.

The only negative comment I would make was that the hotel was quite far away from Sunderland where we were attending a venue. This is in no way the fault of the hotel but ours for not doing our research. The hotel organised taxis for us to attend the venue and even had the forethought to offer that we share with others in the hotel thus, cutting the cost. Putting the customer first,in the current financial climate, that's very rare. Thank you again.
