“Its OK”
Reviewed March 28, 2011

Have stayed here dozens of times on business as PC member, and find the hotel OK, rooms are typical of Hi`s (old Post House hotels) ilk.
I use room service all the time and the food is tasty and filling. The bar is on the small side and gets rather crowded if there`s football on TV.
Its more a business hotel than holiday makers hotel, due to its location, but if you have a car then its OK for leisure too. All in all its fine.

Stayed here last night on the 3rd of March. Having already given the awful Campanile next door £52 not to stay there this Holiday Inn was luxurious, I should have trusted the brand rather than penny pinching . Pleasant greeting by friendly staff, room clean and quiet, despite being so close to the A1, breakfast plentiful, more friendly staff. All in all a perfectly pleasant experience, just wish I'd started here.

I stayed here for one very wet and windy night whilst away on business.
The room (607) was very clean and adequately equipped - I even got slippers wit the bathrobe! The bathroom was a little small but big enough for what you would want to use a bathroom for. Bed was comfortable, clean and of a fair size too.
The TV worked, the tea/coffee making facilities and water in the fridge were adequate and everything appeared to work just fine.
The only criticism I had was of the cost of the (wired) internet connection. £15 for 24 hours use seemed a little on the steep side, and the connecting cable was much too short.
Breakfast was one of the best buffet afairs I've come across and all of the staff were courteous, friendly and helpful.
It's a chain but I really couldn't expect any better.

Stayed here for the night after having deposited my son at Newcastle Uni. Had no complaints about the room which was clean and comfortable. It wasn't as warm as I would have expected but as I don't like to sleep in an overly warm room I wasn't really bothered. The TV worked and there were plenty of tea bags so I was happy.

Husband and I ventured down to the bar for a drink before dinner and so that he could watch Newcastle FC on the big screen TV. There was a wedding party getting going and guests were beginning to gather which meant the bar area fast became full. We decided to eat earlier than intended and found we were sharing the restaurant with a couple of coach loads. This was not a problem as we were eating from the menu and they were having a buffet.

Breakfast the next morning was actually the only really negative aspect to our stay. Weekdays, it was a monday morning, they serve till 9 or 9.30 (can't quite recall which), the wedding party thought that they could be served till 10 which is the time they serve till at weekends. Not possible it seemed and the lights over the buffet went out. Guests were not very happy with this, and after all they had presumably spent quite a bit of money all in all. As we had arrived at 8.45 I was a little surprised that the cooked items put out were not being refreshed, the eggs in particular were like bullets. One lady who arrived just after us was completely unable to eat hers because they were apparently stone cold. The icing on the cake was when the toaster caught fire and toast was definately "off".

All in all though I would stay again as the cleanliness and room comfort made up for the shortcomings in the breakfast department.

I made the mistake of staying at this hotel during September 2010. The room was overheated, with no functional air conditioning. If I opened the window it was impossible to sleep with the noise from the adjacent motorway. The shower had two choices of temperature: hot or very hot. Nor was there any ventilation in the bathroom: hot, moist air filled the bedroom. I couln't receive a news channel on the antiquated TV. I had constant difficulty with key cards. Almost each day hotel staff had to issue a new card. Groups of hotel guests spent most of the night outside dring and shouting.

A veritable tip of a 'hotel.' You stay there at your peril.

Generally hotel is OK... have stayed in many Holiday Inn / ICH hotels before so know what to expect from the group.

Location is good for A1, free parking a bonus. No wifi in rooms, only in bar area which was chargeable and quite expensive too, had to use 3G dongle and reception on that was poor in this area.

Check in staff were fine, however visited bar on the Saturday evening and told restaurant is closed due to private function :(

Bar was chaotically busy due to said private function (and I suspect many were non-guests) and long waits for service. Duty manager was serving and was very stroppy and un-friendly. On the following night hardly any drinks available in the bar due to everything selling out the night before, just one type of wine (the most expensive of course) which they refused to offer at house price. Again same staff member was very grouchy.

Had room service instead of restaurant on first night, which was fine. Food quality fine and served quite promptly despite the busyness downstairs.

Room was clean as per usual IHG standard, however a little dated. Old fashioned and fuzzy TV set, and sofa not very comfortable.

All in all, all right if you don't really have high standards of service, or need wi-fi to work. (Camponile next door has big sign outside advertising free wi-fi throughout hotel)
