Needed somewhere for one night as we were at an event in Durham the next day. What can one say? It's a Premier Inn. It was cheap, clean and the staff were excellent.

Unfortunately there were a number of other guests who thought nothing of making a lot of noise at all hours of the night. Our room was directly opposite the Toby Carvery and very near to the main entrance which didn't help. That and the weather was too warm to close the windows.

Next morning a callow youth who, had he been chocolate would have eaten himself, thought it amusing to make a fool of the waitress. Staff dealt with the situation very professionally & later informed us he had been one of the noisy ones the night before.

Breakfast was standard Premier Inn but the Toby Carvery is soon to open early and will be a fraction of the cost - check it out before you book breakfast.

In summary, you know what you are getting with a Premier Inn.

Room Tip: Chose a room away from the pub and main entrance as it may be quieter.

Stayed in Premier Inn for 4 nights over a week in July 2013. The hotel was clean and location was fine in terms of access to A1 and proximity to Newcastle and Sunderland. The thing that makes this hotel a really good choice is the excellent and friendly staff. We had no particular issue for them to resolve etc it was just their general friendliness and helpfulness. The reception staff were always checking that everything was ok and offering any help. The rooms were all in good condition with TV, tea and coffee and nice beds. Someone mentioned in another review that the rooms were hot and this was true although the temperature outside was also hot and the rooms we stayed in all had a fan. We also kept the window open and overall the noise level was low although there is some building work going on quite close to the hotel (we did not really notice any excessive noise associated with this at odd hours etc). There is parking next to the hotel and we never had a problem finding a space.

The hotel is next to a Toby Carvery that is good value for money at about £6 for a full roast dinner. You get lots of food, but the choice really is just roast dinner and if you want a more varied choice you will need to find something else.

I would recommend this as somewhere to stay and as a 'budget' hotel it was very good.

This is the third time we have stayed at a Premier Inn and whilst I always seem to struggle to find the really cheap rates, you know what you are getting with PI and the consistency is first rate in a all areas. This PI has a Toby Inn attached to it which we did not use and is convenient for the main highway (A1) but is in an odd location but there are other hotels near by also if you prefer. No complaints from me or the family. I think PI would do well to consider installing Air Conditioning in guest rooms in future designs though.

We stayed at this Premier Inn on travels around England and I have to say they were the most wonderful people I have ever come across. We were having trouble finding a Laundromat open and the girls on the front counter offered to do my washing and I was just so grateful to them. We stayed in Premier Inns all through England and this was one of the best since returning to Australia we have now recommended the Premier Inn chain of hotels to all ours friends.

The first thing we noticed after driving for 5 hours was that the vending machine in the reception area was out of order and remained so throughout our stay! Staff were friendly and even recommended a couple of places of interest which we visited. We arrived early before the room was ready and were offered coffee and tea (nice touch). Our room was facing the approach road, opposite a fitness/night club which remained open until the early hours of the morning and there was quite a bit of noise generated from this, meaning we had to keep the window shut. Air conditioning was provided by a small unit that sat on the desk (not that efficient). Although there is a Toby Inn opposite, breakfast was served within the Premier Inn in a rather small dining area which meant that on our first day we had to queue for 20 minutes whilst other guests finished their breakfast. Once we did manage to get a table we felt rushed with of Full English (no buffet here as the waitress takes your order) arrived whilst we were still on the cereals. By the time we got to this it was cold! The queuing problem was the same the following day, and I was tempted to ask for a refund and go to the Toby for one of their breakfasts. They need more staff to get the tables ready - On the Sunday the receptionist was helping out in the dining area. The hot breakfast arrived after the cereal but was mixed up with meat items on my wife's plate, who is a vegetarian. The waitress apologised for this citing that the chef was new!

Would we stay again? As regular Premier Inn users this one was a disappointment and with other Premier Inns around the area then probably not.

Room Tip: None really. Rooms facing the approach road have a club opposite which closes late and at the rear i...

Firstly, Thank you so much for taking the time to let us know about your recent stay and please let me apologise for the shortfalls that you experienced.

As our restaurant is very popular, it can get busy at times however we have since reviewed our team levels at the weekend to avoid this happening in the future and full traning has been undertaken with our newest team members.

We hope this will not deter you from staying with us again and look forward to welcoming you in the future.

Best Regards,

Aaron Beswick.

Stayed 2 nights June 26/27, came up for our son's graduation in Durham- unable to get a room in Durham as so busy. Well worth the short drive (20 mins or so) to this brilliant hotel. We've always been impressed with the friendliness of the people in the North East, having stayed at several Durham hotels over the last 4 years. The staff here, though, were exceptional, from the night porter who cheerfully greeted our late arrival, to the cleaners and reception staff who all took time to ask how we were and if we needed anything. The chef, Tal, and Amy the waitress at breakfast were particularly friendly: their banter after delivering over a hundred cooked breakfasts each morning was infectious, and together with the very high quality food set us up for the day each morning. Really can't fault Premier Inns- they seem to have got it right, especially at this hotel. Thanks for putting the icing on the cake on a very special occasion for us. We'll be back if ever we're up in the North East again.
