It is several years since my last visit and I still enjoyed my return here. As a free museum it is a really worthwhile place to spend an hour. Locally found artefacts and an overview of the Roman Wall and occupation are on display in the small but well laid out museum. The grounds contain real Roman foundations and of course the rebuilt Roman gatehouse.

We visited here in the summer and it is an amazing place. You really get a feel for the size of the original fort and you can go into the reconstructed Governor's house, soldiers barracks and gatehouse. There is a small museum attached and entry is free to the site though a donation is appreciated.
A special mention must go to Jack Walton- customer service assistant for all his help in finding some photographs for me and patiently answering all my questions.

We had visited dozens of sites along Hadrian's wall. This was the last in the North. Each site had its own speciality. The reconstruction of the south gate of this port fort really brought it home how much the Romans had done. Realizing the size of their constructions and the permanence that they imbued them with was awesome. There are aso reconstructions of the Commander's quarters and some of the legionnaire spaces. It was gratifying to see painted walls, finished floors and complete buildings with furnishings. Although most of the site is an open field with only a few stones to delineate the foundations of long gone buildings, as are most all the Roman sites, it was truly brilliant for the caretakers to embark on a project to rebuild some of the buildings. It really gave me a chance to imagine more fully the life of the Romans. The museum is small, but has a couple of great items. Well worth the visit if you are interested in History.

Hello

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review of your visit to Arbeia. It's fantastic to hear that you appreciated the full scale reconstructions so much; the West Gate turned 30 this year and all of the buildings were recreated following years and years of research and are as authentic as possible, and indeed unique. If you're ever in the area again, please visit us - in the summer months we run a programme of historical experiences like gladiator battles, Roman markets and Roman soldier displays.

Many years ago I was involved with excavations at Arbeia. Recently I was talking to friends about the site and decided to re-visit. Arbeia has several replica buildings to explore. It's recreation of the gate house is interesting and well kept, the commanders house is worth seeing, however paint work in the courtyard is flaking. It has a small museum with housing finds from the site, and yes at least one is from when I was working the dig. I certainly enjoyed my visit which brought back memories. If you are in the area Arbeia is worth visiting.

Hello Chris

Thank you for taking the time to write a review, it must be quite exciting to come and see objects on display that you remember being found. The West Gate reconstruction has just undergone essential maintenance; it was also 30 this year.

I hadnt been here for many years - and the amazing work on the site really brings it to life - recreating the living conditions of the Roman officers, lots of relics well maintained and described - even in Brail. Only suggestion - maybe have the descriptions in a few more languages such as French, Italian, etc.

Arbeia Roman Fort was excavated in 1875 but covered over and houses built on it. It was later excavated again. You can see many artefacts like jewellery, tools, altars and headstones. There is a reconstructed Commanding Officer’s house and a replica three story West Gate where you can walk up the stairs to the third floor and ramparts and admire the view. There are, of course, a lot of foundations of the different buildings on the site. There are various events organised during the year. It is free to visit but there are donation boxes.
