“Hard times Good Times”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 8, 2012

The displays are well set out telling the story from roman shields to today some hard times and some good times. Some affluent times some very poor times. Ship repair and the coal industry feature heavily as you would imagine. Good time but I would eat elsewere.

small but friendly. Good varied displays enough for all likes. Two different displays on different aspects of South Shields. Brilliant Ice Cream over the road after visiting.

“Good museum”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 30, 2012

My Brother knew of this place so we went in and it was very good, I have read all Catherine Cookson Books and enjoyed them all so it was great to hear about her and they had a small street scene and what her kitchen would have been like, also a lot of information about her. well worth a visit if you read Catherine Cookson Books

“A lovely little gem”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 20, 2012

I've always loved this museum, it's very small, but well packed out with many themes of South Shields. There is Catherine Cookson, Roman finds, Seafaring/Smugglers/The Cliffs/The Gibbet etc. The arcades, war time, words from people in local businesses and experiences of first coming to the Town. It's really good. Upstairs they change some of the exhibits so we've had dinosaurs, local art (there is always art anyway, but these are whole exhibits) at the moment, there is a brilliant exhibit about weddings, civil ceremonies, partnerships etc.
There has been a refit with a coffee shop in recent years, I'm very impressed, but my 4 stars is only because for all the modernisation, they have a habit of ignoring those pushy buttons if they stop working. There is really no excuse and this brings joy to the children. Also, for all the children love them, there are also snakes, spiders (real ones) and lizards in tanks. Much as these are brilliant, they are not relevant to the country, for these poor creatures would freeze or drown in our dreadful climate, so surely they could have had, ooh, I don't know, regional fish? Mice? Local insects? That sort of thing, I can't fault the interest for the children, but it's not really relevant is it?
