“What A Lovely Place!”
Reviewed October 31, 2013

Visiting family in Newcastle who know the area - I was impressed by the natural beauty of the park & it's immaculate lawns, colourful bandstand & wonderful diversity of play-areas for my six-year-old grandson! The small train chuffing around the park was great, the pedaloes unfortunately closed but am assured that they are fab!! Add a visit to Toney's Cafe for lunch (delicious) & you have a lovely Day Out! If the rain falls, there is always the Amusement Arcades across the road, small enought to be fun & spend your loose change!! Would highly recommend!!

“Just lovely”
Reviewed October 8, 2013

I visit both the South and North Marine parks regularly and am very rarely disappointed. The parks are kept beautifully tidy and there really is something for everyone depending on the time of year. In the summer you can enjoy outdoor concerts (rock and pop, classical and brass bands) in and around the bandstand and throughout the year there is a little steam train running around the perimeter which is popular with children and model train enthusiasts alike. The cafe/ice cream parlour is very nice but could do with staying open a little later especially in the summer. There is a play park and sandpit which caters for small children and those who are a little older and more adventurous. This gets very busy during the summer and weekends and really should have been a little bigger. There is a boating lake with swans and ducks to feed. The boats are a little shabby though and could do with an update. The North marine park is much quieter and has a small putting green during the summer and lots of twisting paths to explore. Both parks are free to enter and well worth a visit.

“New perspective”
Reviewed September 27, 2013

Having lived in the area all my life, I kind of forgot how good these open spaces were. Two young grandchildren have made me look again at these assets to the town. Plenty of open spaces for picnics and games, the miniature steam train circling the boating lake, much improved toilet and refreshment facilities, and new play areas for younger children.
Small musical events in the bandstand, along with occasional sight of people taking the summer air in Victorian costumes (I assume they're from the adjacent Westovians Theatre?) all adding character to the park.
If you don't pack a lunch, there are options at three corners of the South park - the Marine (pub), the Sea Hotel (& restaurant), Sambuca (Italian restaurant in the 'Dunes' complex adjacent to the Ocean Beach Fair) or the Sundial ('family' friendly pub).
If the weather turns, the Dunes has a large indoor play area.
For the North side, the Harbour Lights at the top of the hill offers good quality food and drink.

“Nice morning walk, pity about the litter”
Reviewed September 25, 2013

Took a slow morning walk around the entire Marine Park (both the North and the South). The landscaping was pretty good and views (weather permitting) of the sea are stunning, due to its elevation.

However the condition of the swan lake in the South Park is appalling – there is an immense amount of litter swimming in the lake, as well as strewn across the pedestrian roads (a large proportion of them being Colman’s takeaway boxes!) This park needs definitely needs much more maintenance and upkeep. The elevated parts of both the North and South parks are generally cleaner than the lower areas, where the swan lake is.

Summary: It’s certainly worth a visit for a refreshing morning stroll… until you get to the dirty parts, that is. Landscaping 5/5, maintenance 1/5. Overall: 3/5.
