“Fine”
Reviewed July 28, 2009

My boyriend and I stayed here for one night at the beginning of July. Overall it was fine and pleasant. The room was clean and the bed was comfortable (although a little squeaky) but as the room overlooked the main road, we had to sleep with the windows shut as traffic noise was loud - it got a bit too hot in the night. I would agree with past comments that it is slightly overpriced.

Before you read this, please bear in mind that we stayed here on the hottest day of the year so far (31 degrees)...

We got to Farnham 3 hours early for check in but met Roger in the car park - our room wasn't ready but the nice touch was he knew who we were and which room we had booked.

We went off to Farnham town centre - easily walked but in such extreme weather, more comfortable in a car with air con ;-) - lovely town! Then discovered Waverley Abbey - great walk, wildlife and ruins of a 13th Century abbey.

When we went back to the hotel to check in, Roger had gone and we discovered that there was only one member of staff on duty, but it's a small place and she was so helpful, we didn't mind. Although, having read a couple of other reviews about the food, we were a little concerned when she told us she was the chef for the evening as well. We needn’t have worried, more about that later.

The room (The Scarlet Suite) was amazing - our pictures don’t do it justice and well, compared to some suites we have stayed in, in larger ‘Chain’ hotels, it blew them out of the water! Four poster bed, romantic hues of scarlet and dark wood furniture, 46 inch flat screen, private dining facilities, candles (and matches) around the bath...

All this meant that, after a few stressful months, we were able to relax from the moment we closed the door, although with the heat in the room (no air-con unfortunately, maybe this will change in the future Roger??), the first thing we did was fill the huge bath with chilled water and cool off!

The suite is on the ground floor which meant it was slightly cooler than the other rooms but it did mean that with the windows wide open the traffic noise was a bit of a distraction, but at night it was relatively quiet which was when it mattered :-) And as I said at the start of this review, we were there when it was ridiculously hot. We really hope to return for our wedding anniversary in February when the temperature might be more bearable.

The room is right next to the bar area but fear not it is well soundproofed and we couldn’t hear any noise from there.

After our chilled bath, we didn’t really want to bother dressing up to go out for dinner, so we took advantage of the private dining facilities and ordered room service. The receptionist/chef kept apologising that it would take about half an hour for the food but we really didn’t mind -the longer it took to prepare, the less worried we were about microwaves being involved ;-)
As I said earlier, we needn’t have worried - the seabass was delicious and the breaded chicken was good too. The desserts would have been a little disappointing had there been a chef on site, but to be honest, we didn’t care where they were prepared, the pre-made creme brulee and new york cheesecake were delicious. The value of the food is relative to the convenience of having a private dining area, not having to dress up, the cost of taxis in to town etc. This place doesn’t claim to be a fine dining establishment, it’s a small B&B which focusses heavily on the quality of the rooms and the service you get which is just the way we like it ;-)

The breakfast the following morning was equally delicious - a relaxed affair where you help yourself to the first course of tea/coffee (great selection of teas) and cereal/fruit. A lovely greeting by Roger and his assistant (didn’t get her name, but she was very attentive) and the toast arrived with butter actually at a speadable temperature (another small but lovely touch). The cooked breakfast was all freshly prepared (apart from the baked beans (they’re tinned - well duh!)) and very tasty.

Book this B&B if you want a really special time - we had a wonderful time at The Hotel de Vie and look forward to our next visit!

Second visit a smaller room (room 6 at £90) this time . Really a bit too small for 2 people and only a 4'6" bed.
The atmosphere is still laid back , breakfasts are still in the top league.
I felt it was rather expensive , but there isn't anything else cheaper in the surrounding area and it is only a 5 minute walk down the road into Farnham for the shops or a choice of restaurants.

Let's be clear about this. This place looks like a bog standard B&B from the outside and it looks like a bog standard B&B inside. It is a bog standard B&B. What is more it is very noisy. The rooms are small and NOT glamorous at all.
Unfortuantely this is a sad indictment of the state of tripadvisor when the vast majority of the reviews are so clearly [--].
It's clean and the bathrooms are alright. That's about it I'm afraid. Is it worth anywhere near £110 a night - no bloody way!! Avoid this place and go to a genuine 4* hotel instead, that's my advice.

My partner and I have just returned from our first visit to Hotel de Vie. we had a lovely evening. We stayed in the scarlet room which was beautiful, very romantic and exactly what we were looking for. Breakfast was lovely (just for me lacking some fresh fruit but still great) and service was great.

We didnt get to see Roger but were looked after very well by his staff. The only improvement I would suggest is that consideration be given to putting a note in the scarlet room (or when the staff show you to the room and run through using the bath they could point its location out) to tell you where the swing is rather than (as we had to) asking where it might be from the reception staff (slight unecessary embarassment in my view for somewhere that otherwise is very discrete). As we now know it is above the door in a box, but the shelf is only viewable from the bed side of the room and we wern't to know.

Irrespective we will return! xx

I think the previous reviews are a very accurate measure of this hotel. Not a great deal to get excited about outside, hence no exterior photos to view but the interior is original ,quirky even and definitely different which is what we were looking for. My main gripe would be the water temperature and consistancy in the shower but thats what you get in a building of that age and size.
We were given room one because i was looking for a "deal "and own up to being a bit of a "cheapscate" its probably worth paying a bit more for a better room with a bigger bed and the more interesting decor but that said my partner was happy with the room , the hotel and the breakfast was fantastic ! Good quality and a good selection well prepared !!
So to sum up, its well worth a visit if you want a change from the normal holiday lodge inn type accomodation just check the water temp before jumping in the shower !

Kevin, thanks for taking the time to write your review here and for being so generous with your praise as I know that the problem with the shower was frustrating for you.

Very unusually the two huge baths in the Scarlet Suite and Parisian Dreams rooms had just been filled before you jumped in the shower. We have two large boilers in the hotel and we have discovered that on the rare occasions that both huge bath's are filled at the same time (twice in 20 months) it takes aout 20 minutes for the water to get hot again...

Really sorry about the inconvenience and thanks again for your kind words. . .
