“Short stay in Farnham”
Reviewed April 8, 2014

Stayed here in April 2014 while visiting relatives in Farnham.
Location-wise the hotel is on the edge of town. Probably not an easy walk in as there is a dual carriageway between the hotel and central Farnham, but it is only around a 5 min drive.
We actually chose the hotel because it offered free parking which several other hotels in town couldn't guarantee.
Hotel is an annex building behind the Princess Royal pub. Good sized room, spotlessly clean. It reminded me a lot of a Premier Inn in terms of styling.
Bit of an issue with noise, both from the incredibly squeaky floorboards (glad we chose an upstairs room!) and the dual carriageway outside, which while not overbearingly loud might be a problem for light sleepers.
Princess Royal itself seemed a decent place for a drink prior to heading into Farnham itself and I thought the breakfast options served in the pub restaurant and included in the price of the room, were excellent.

Room Tip: Choose an upstairs room so you don't have to listen to creaking floorboards above your head.

We spent two nights at the hotel beginning of March, we found all the staff welcoming and friendly.
Our room was on the second floor and was spacious and spotlessly clean. We had the best nights sleep in a hotel yet, the large bed was so comfortable and had feather pillows and quilt. The freshly cooked breakfast was delicious with perfect scrambled eggs. We had lunch on one occasion which was also very good. Our only criticism was the squeaky floorboards in the room which could easily be rectified but will not put us off staying again.

Room Tip: Stay in a second floor room to avoid the squeaky floorboards overhead.

From the moment we arrived at Reception, to the time we departed, we found all members of staff to be friendly, professional, and nothing was too much trouble.
The room was large, and had more power sockets than normally found in hotels. The bed was large and comfortable, and the room had an adjustable heater plus an air con unit for warmer days.
The bar area of the pub was extremely comfortable, with a large selection of beers and wine.
Attached to the bar is a restaurant, our evening meal was very good, I also enjoyed my full English breakfast the following morning although my wife was not too impressed with her poached eggs, which were hard.
Certainly a place to recommend.

Room Tip: It may be advisable to request a room away from the A31, the road noise did not disturb us but we di...

It's great to have more spacious accommodation in a pub than you often get in a 3* hotel, & this was certainly the case here. The bed was king-sized & everywhere was spotlessly clean.
The food was also excellent, both morning & evening & the atmosphere was convivial.
If you needed anything, the staff response was friendly & prompt & nothing was too much trouble.
It was good value too & this is a dog-friendly place, which is a bonus.

Just spent one night in the very clean and comfortable hotel at the back of the pub. Highlight was the food, excellent smoked salmon and gammon steak was best I've ever had. Breakfast was also delicious and all for a very good price. Staff all friendly and welcoming without exception!

We stayed at this pub with rooms a couple of weeks ago while attending a wedding and overall had a good experience. The rooms are in a separate building behind the pub, with a secure entrance and plenty of parking immediately adjacent.

A positive was the pub itself, which had plenty of character and very good food in the restaurant, both at dinner and breakfast, with a good choice on the menus. Ingredients were fresh and portions were more than adequate. The staff members were, without exception, friendly, professional and helpful. Service was quick and efficient and they really worked at making us feel both welcome and valued.

The accommodation experience was average. We had booked an upstairs room and were very glad we had, because the floorboards creaked so much when we walked about that we seriously doubted whether anyone in the room below us got a moment’s peace. We found ourselves tip-toeing around in an attempt to reduce the noise, especially when returning after the wedding after midnight. It seemed bizarre, given the newness of the building. Noise from the busy A31 nearby was also noticeable, although double-glazed windows helped to reduce this; however, this is to be expected if you choose to stay by a major road and not the fault of the pub.

The room was, in my opinion, on the pricey side for what it offered, but then you do expect to pay Farnham prices when you stay in the area. Niggles included: a shower head that was fixed at a rakish angle that meant water sprayed onto the floor; some dubious-looking marks on the runner across the bed; only four tea bags on the complementary tea/coffee tray (although on the plus side they did provide biscuits); the aforementioned insanely creaky floorboards; my personal dislike – ‘open-plan’ wardrobes and cupboards. If I’m staying in a 2-star hotel, I don’t expect more than the basics, but if I’m paying £83 per night I’d like a door on my wardrobe please. The room was also cold when we arrived – not very welcoming on a dark, rainy January evening.

Good points for the room were: plenty of space; reading lights on both sides of the bed; adjustable electric heater that worked well; enough storage to put all of our belongings away, including the suitcases; a ‘proper’ hairdryer and a good mirror beside it, rather than the usual pathetic version in the bathroom that many places think is acceptable.

Overall, the good points outweighed the less positive aspects and I’d probably stay here again.

Room Tip: Ask for a first floor room if you can manage stairs - floorboards creak badly and may disturb you if...

Good afternoon

Thank you taking the time to provide your feedback to us. We appreciate both the positive and negative as this allows us to conitually improve our offering and service.

I am delighted that on a whole you enjoyed your stay and will look into your other comments.

I do agree about the floorboards and this is an area that I have highlighted to my manager that requires attention as after 9 years we are in need of some attention in certain areas.

As for the bed runner I do apologise and there should of not been a stain on this. We have in the last week replaced all of the curtains, bed runners, pelmets and cushions in all rooms as this was in need in redecorating and feel that this provides a much needed enhancment to the room as well as ensuring privacy and blocking light when the curtains are closed.

I do hope that you will return next time you are in the area and see that we are improving what we offer in comparison to the hotels around us.

Kind regards

Tania Irwin
