We went here for Sunday lunch with some friends who live locally, the pub is on a nice street leading to the castle, parking can be an issue as its always busy.
The pub has loads of period character and charm some would say its messy and cluttered with all its odd tables and chairs everywhere, to me this all adds to the charm. Very cosy inside with open fire and the smell of wood burning. The staff were very nice and very matter of fact no generic false chain pub charm here. They sell a range of local beers hand drawn and very nice, we all had the sunday roast which is £11 which was very very good all parts cooked to perfection, finished off by the most gooey cheesecake at £6, sheer indulgence.
The place was packed so booking essential. If you want chic and modern with glass and chrome dont go to the nelson if you want traditional english charm thats a bit rough round the edges try it out.
