“Rural life centre?”
Reviewed November 25, 2013

We took our 5year old grandson to visit Santa last Christmas advertised as The Santa Express, a short ride on the train then we were met by the 'Christmas fairy' a wander around then a VERY long wait to see Santa in a very cold and draughty barn, the smell from the penned sheep was awful couldn't wait to get away to get warm.
Will not go again.

“A really gentle place”
Reviewed October 26, 2013

We stop here every week-end as we have to travel between Reading and Worthing. We have joined as 'Rustics' so we can have a stretch of the grand-childrens legs and wander round for 30 minutes or so, to see the latest offering of historic and vintage life. They have quite a few diiferent themes over the year. We love the way the old craftsmen invited us to have a go on a 'Bodgers' Lathe and have enormous time to explain what they are doing. The whole museum is covered in trees and thats really pleasant. The railway is 'different' with odd rolling stock from all around Europe. I love the place.

“We, and especially, our Grandchildren love it”
Reviewed October 3, 2013

We have been to this museum on a number of occasions and the children varying in age from 6 to 12 love it. You do have to work at it a little as many of the exhibits need - for the children - a bit of discussion, hands on and experience to get the best from them. I feel that - contrary to the earlier review - the museum gives excellent opportunities to explore life in earlier times and to see the mix from the prefab to Victorian School, to workshops etc. It is a real eye opener to today's children over impressed by sitting at computers. We find it an excellent experience in rural life from tools to transport to machinery to rural business

As for value, we were there for 4 hours at our last visit - including a couple of visits to the cafe - and it was us begging to leave then not the children.

What I found most revealing was the detail remembered by the children when recounting their visit to parents. It is also interesting that they are keen to return - you can't ask more than that

“Superb collection of yester-year”
Reviewed September 2, 2013

The Rural Museum is just that - not a theme park style attraction as some seen to have wanted - it is a taste of England from years gone by. Educational and varied - maybe best value if visited on an "Event" day if you have children. Large area of buldings crammed with artifacts from the past, good basic cafe and a steam train for a short ride. I was taken years ago on school trips and the museum has grown significantly and become more interesting over time, now my son has fond memories of learning craftsmen's skills on visits.

“great morning”
Reviewed August 23, 2013

I went on the Gypsy weekend and the whole thing was fabulous, looking around the old school house and machinery was really interesting. This is where schools should go on trips and people should take their children at weekends and in holidays.
