“Pretty good hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 24, 2012

The hotel was clean and tidy, with modern facilities. The breakfast area seems like more of an after thought than a well established area but that is a consequence of not having a real restaurant on site.
The check-in staff were generally useful, except one man who mumbles instead of correctly articulating, making communicating a challenge for my non-English family. Price changes seemed like a bit of a shot in the dark here, changing more dynamically than most but not bad value overall.
The bar is open to 1am.

Room Tip: Some rooms are miles away, the ground floor rooms aren't as noisy as you might think, although t...

Dear Guest,
Thank you for reviewing our hotel and the feedback given regarding our breakfast area, the design and size meaning that it can get busy at weekends when the hotel experiences a higher volume of guests staying with us. Room rates vary in accordance to demand and also by day of week, meaning that there can be a difference in tariff paid from time to time. I hope that this does not dissuade you from visiting us again in the future.
Kind regards

As with other reviews, the location is amazing. A fabulous view over the Epsom Downs and the racecourse that is faultless. Plenty of free parking available and free WIFI in the lobby area.

Everything else is what you expect from a Holiday Inn Express. The rooms have all the facilities that you would expect, the staff are ok, the food is ok and so on.

My advice would be to venture into Epsom itself (10 minute drive) and get something to eat of an evening

Dear Guest,
Great to hear that you loved the hotel's location and yes, we are spoilt with both the views of the Downs and the Racecourse! These come in particularly useful on race days for many of our guests. Thank you for taking the time to review our hotel and we hope to see you again soon.

We (2 adults 2 kids) stayed here in June 2012 for my daughters birthday as we visited nearby chessington.
The bedroom number 037 wasvclean spacious and had a great view of the outside area and the racecourse. The beds were very comfortable a fab nights sleep had by all. Breakfast was good only grumble was the cooked breakfast was lukewarm but apart from that no issues. This hotel is located in a superb location especially for race goers. The local town centre is worth a visit too. Staff friendly and polite.

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 16, 2012

We recently booked this hotel as it was closest (and cheapest!) to the venue for a wedding that we had been invited to.

Upon arrival, the reception/foyer/breakfast area was large and welcoming, clean and well air conditioned. The check-in was quick and easy, with a polite, courteous and helpful member of staff at the front desk who also helped us contact a local taxi company. There were 2 lifts to take you up to the levels with the rooms, both were large enough to hold half-dozen people with luggage, and were quite fast.

Our room was at the front of the hotel, directly above reception and overlooking the racecourse. It was of normal/average size for this type of hotel, and was spotlessly clean and air conditioned. There was a TV, desk, sofa and tea/coffee making facilities in the room, as well as storage space for luggage and a small open hanging area for clothes.

There was a funky security chain that was actually built into the main door; it operated by flicking a tiny mechanical switch on the doorframe, which 'grabbed' the lug poking out of the door. It was quite loud in operation (yes, I had to play!), so the noise would likely alert you or wake you up to any unauthorised access to the room, not that this was a problem during our stay. I was impressed with the cunning design.

The bathroom area was well laid out too. There was a sensible sized wash basin in the corner with a mirror around it. The shower was a walk-in type with a curtain, but the curtain didn't hug you as many hotels do. The shower was quite spacious, I'd guestimate a little over a metre square. The best part for me was the shower head was on a hose rather than being fixed to the wall. Temperature control was perfect, although water pressure was a little low, probably only a little more than my gravity fed shower at home. However, I noticed the shower head was an eco-friendly one, so it probably had some kind of restrictor built in. There were 2 lights in there, the main one, plus a blue LED type so you could make a nighttime visit to the bathroom without dazzling yourself.

Another great innovation is the bathroom was a 2-in-1. The shower and toilet were next to each other. However, if you opened the door fully, it closed in on the toilet with a separate latch built into the shower frame, making it a separate cubicle. In this position, the shower and the basin were available to use for anyone else who needed to them - great for saving time if you're slow in the morning.

The bed was extremely comfortable and gave an excellent nights sleep for both of us. The room was surprisingly quiet, given the location and the semi-full car park outside.

The complimentary breakfast was buffet style, with a selection of sausage, beans and egg from the hot plate, and toast, cereal, yoghurt, fruit, etc from the cold section. There was a good selection of hot and cold drinks too. I would personally recommend the hot chocolate, this was absolutely delicious!

There wasn't any wifi in the front room, although it was apparently available in reception. However, internet was available through the TV if you so desired.

The only negative point that I could find during my short stay, and this is so petty I really don't even know why I'm including it, is that the picture quality on the TV was quite poor. However, it was still watchable. However, as we only had it on for less than 30 mins, this really wasn't a problem. It may be if you were planning on spending a lot of time in your room though.

My overall verdict on this hotel is it's an excellent, clean and friendly hotel that is well worth the money in this part of town.

I'm not a great fan of the HIX brand but this was very near to where we needed to be for an evening function.

Good points:
-Terrific location by Epsom racecourse
-Modern and well looked after property
-Nice reception/bar/breakfast area
-The room was clean, modern, basic. Nice, clean bathroom.
-Pleasant staff (but in some cases poorly trained - see below)

Bad points
-Small double bed, as is usual for a HIX
-Very limited TV channel choice
-Poorly trained bar staff. I asked for a bottle of Peroni beer, I had to ask for a glass and the young bar lady person first asked me if I wanted ice in it, and then gave me a very hot glass that must have been straight out of the dishwasher. When I asked her to change it for a cold glass she looked at me as if I was mad!
-Someone, presumably a member of staff, came into our room at 9.00AM without knocking, then left when they realised it was occupied. Somewhat unforgivable.
-We stayed in the HIX on PCR points so can't complain about the price but it would have been expensive to pay.
-No apparent PCR status recognition (though I'm not sure there's much they can do at a HIX.)
-Limited breakfast but it is free, usual ghastly hotel buffet scrambled eggs, not bad sausages, no bacon

We received a very lukewarm welcome at check-in and considering the price we paid i would have expected better. The room was spotlessly clean and in a good position but felt we paid way too much. We asked for 2 coffees at the bar and paid £2.50 each, only to be directed to an automatic vending machine with poor quality coffee. At those prices i expected better!!
Breakfast was self service and some of this was fine, but the pastries tasted old and the bread rolls were hard and stale. I've had much better hotels at a chaeper rate.

Thank you for taking the time to write your trip advisor review. I’m sorry to read that you feel you received a ‘lukewarm welcome’ this is most certainly not our normal standards on reception. We have a long standing team who are normally praised for the efforts and friendliness. I am also sorry that you believe you ‘paid way too much’ for your stay. Our rates do vary depending on demand in the area and certain events i.e. racing. Guests do benefit most by booking early to avoid the higher rates as the hotel is in high demand. Regards your breakfast, the Express Breakfast includes 3 hot items; sausage, scrambled egg and beans plus a selection of cereals, fruits, toast, cheeses, yogurts, pain au chocolat and croissant all based around a self-service buffet. I will pass your comments to the kitchen regarding the standards of the items you mentioned, please accept my apologies.

Kind Regards

Prices vary during the year here. As previously mentioned, it is clean, basic and an easy overnight. It can feel like a ripoff but at the normal or low prices, good value for a good location. Breakfast is decent. Lots of food options within a 5min drive. Be aware that the advertised "free wifi" only works in the lobby.

Thank you for taking the time to write your trip advisor review. I can confirm our rates do vary throughout the week and throughout the year depending on demand in the area. Guests will benefit from booking early as the hotel does get very busy. With regards to your WiFi issues the hotel has only ever had free WiFi in the Great Room and chargeable hard wired access in all bedrooms, I’m sorry if you feel you have been miss lead ion any way. However I’m happy to read that you enjoyed our location and breakfast. Look forward to welcoming you back again soon.
