“mostly good”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 11, 2013

My husband and I stayed one night in this hotel and, having read the reviews, were very worried. However, most things were good with only 1 slight issue.
Firstly staff on reception were very friendly and professional. The exterior of the hotel and ground ere clean and tidy as we're all public areas.
We had booked a junior superior room, but we're upgraded to a club suite without asking and free of charge. The suite ( room 312) was on the third floor but easily accessible via a very old, tatty but serviceable lift. The room was very large, beautifully clean and spacious and had everything you needed. Te bathroom was also very clean, spacious and perfectly serviceable. Plenty of towels. The bed was lovely and big and comfortable enough fir one night. Pillows were very big and could make your neck quite sore. View of beautifully kept grounds was stunning.
Restaurant staff at dinner were very professional. Fullmarks to Jayson (? Maitre D') for superb professionalism especially later on in the meal. First courses of cheese shuffle and soup were lovely. Vegetarian options are extremely limited and I was advised by staff to avoid them as they weren't very good and they had received previous complaints from other guests. Similarly my husband was advised to avoid the pork for the same reasons. It's always a bit worrying when staff tell you to avoid food on the menu!
We both ordered chicken. After about 20 minutes we were told there would be a further delay because there was a large group in and the kitchen couldn't cope. We were given a free glass of champagne whilst we waited. Husbands chicken was good when it did arrive, but mine was burned and very tough. Jason gave us free desserts as compensation which were very nice. Just a warning- wine starts st £7-10 per glass.
Breakfast is full english or pastries, toast, cereal etc and very nice. Be careful about the staff hairs on plates. All staff very friendly and polite, but the young english blond manager needs to learn not to shout at her staff across the restaurant.
All in all a pleasant stay. I paid half the going rate through group on. It was worth the £95 we paid especially with the upgrade room, but I do not think it is worth the £250 full rate.

Room Tip: Book club room 312

A rare treat, & my mum's 60th birthday. When booking was told over the phone that afternoon tea was served between 1pm and 5pm. However was also asked what time we would be expected so as to let the kitchen staff know. When we arrived we checked in with reception, she rang through to somebody and said " some people for afternoon tea where shall they go ,are you ready, ok when you no where to put them ,and when you've made up the table let me know". We where then told to wait in a room off reception and somebody would get us when they were ready.
We waited for around 10-15 mins. And taken to a corridor ! We couldnt belive it ,this lovely huge hotel and we were put in a corridor by the staff service entrance. They had set up a low coffee table it had been laid out with tea plates and large knifes & forks, we where then asked if we would like tea or coffee. No offer of different teas available? She came back with 2 x Large canteen style pots of tea/ coffee. Which we had to find room for on table. They proceeded to serve a chopping board of sandwiches, scones & cake, the waitress (who was very sweet) was told by a senior member of staff to drag another table over to sit at the end of our coffee table as there was no room for all the chopping boards of food!
It would have been lovely to have been served at intervals. And on top of that we must have had a very large foot full of at least 100 people going back and forth with trollies of glasses etc..
We laughed about it , it was like some kind of joke!. For us part of a treat like afternoon tea isn't just about the food, but the surroundings too. We could have been anywhere!

Was here just over a week ago treating my mum for a night stay. Upon checking in the staff were very helpful when I asked them to change rooms as we needed easier access to facilities (I didn't realise just how big the hotel was going to be). We had dinner at the hotel, the food was good and Jaysun in the restaurant treated us very nicely.
The bedroom itself was quite warm but you can open the windows - we had a beautiful view over the golf course.
We used the swimming pool, jacuzzi, steam room and sauna and had them all to ourselves. Breakfast the next morning was buffet style but it was actually very good and the food was hot and fresh.
Would definitely go back again and definitely recommend.

Have just returned from a Golf Weekend. The hotel is quirky, situated in lovely surroundings. The room was clean, comfortable and well equipped. The staff were friendly but nobody seemed to know what they were doing. We were directed to 3 different rooms for dinner before we found the right one. Dinner service was slow with people being served out of order. When our food did arrive it was average at best. The wine list was poor and expensive. Breakfast was basic buffet fare, again with slow service for tea & coffee. Did not use the Leisure centre as the swimming pool was closed. I asked reception for an early morning call whicn never happened. All in all i won`t be rushing back

Beautiful building from the outside and high expectations. Busy reception area, evening wedding guests and residents milling around a small space. Difficult to communicate with reception staff due to noise. Avoid LG10...it's a sauna. We had to move, dreadful. Thank you to Night Manager Jo for doing her best but G62, our final destination, had v comfy beds but the bath/shower area and roon were awful. Breakfast just edible...cold plates, empty tureens, cheap orange juice and cardboard bread. Don't ask for coffee. V v average. 4 star is punching high. Oh, forgot to say the swimming pool was out of order.....

I recently stayed here as part of an evening function.

On arrival down the long driveway we were greeted by the most beautiful sight. A huge, grand old property with beautifully well kept gardens. Our expectations level had been set.
Sadly when we entered the hotel, it was a different story. The carpet leading in needed a good vacuum, and while waiting to check in, almost became part of a very disorganised wedding party as they made their way to the reception. Despite staff on hand who could have easily offered a little guidance to this madness.

The receptionist didn't understand us, and we had to write our names down for her to enable her to check us in. We were then guided through the wedding party to take the lift, but quickly ushered to another lift by another member of staff. All very tense having been here only 10 minutes.

Our room was ok. Slightly smaller than expected. The bed was comfy but that's about the only good part. The bathroom had dead bugs in the light fixtures! Not a nice view. And the water pressure was outrageous! The cold water literally dribbled out!

The evening function went well and the food was ok.

Overall I feel this hotel needs to pay more attention to the rooms and guests. Rather then concentrating on the upkeep of the gardens. We had a good stay but not what we were expecting from this grand looking venue.

Thank you to the function staff on the evening, you were all exceptionally good.

A great restaurant by anyone's definition and one we are happy to review. Jayson the manager made our dinning experience quite lovely. We stayed at the historic hotel for two nights, beautiful grounds, lovely comfy room, with great views of the grounds, however health retreat could do with a revamp, changing room facilities are dated
