We used to go to Malcolm John's Cassoulet...it was conveniently placed near to where my Mum lives.
The new BV is not much further... and the French style of the menu is both familiar and appealing.
The new BV is a terrific re-iteration of Malcolm's two previous Croydon restaurants; Cassoulet and Fish and Grill. It is sophisticated and relaxed and the food is great.
You can sense that this is an idea that can be rolled out...
Based on our experience, you would want one of Malcolm John's restaurants just around the corner! This is very good - like a bit of Paris at the bottom of the road.

Lovely food. The starters were amazing especially the fish platter. Been here twice with a toddler. Staff accommodating and friendly. Have enjoyed the lobster on both occasions.

We loved fish and grill (brasserie vacherin's predecessor) so hoped that this would be of a similar standard... How wrong we were!

We arrived at 7.15, managed to order drinks about 15 mins later. I am pregnant and limited to soft drinks and asked for water- I was poured half a small glass before the waiter disappeared with the rest of the jug! Another 15 mins later we were able to order food... After 10 mins of hearing the table next to us complaining about the poor quality of their food our stomach churning starters turned up... My husband had scallops and black pudding- 3 tiny scallops and mashed up black pudding (which looked like a deposit left from a dog) was not worth over £8.00!! My deep fried baby squids we disgustingly oily and the batter was soggy... Not a good start- after demolishing the bread basket and picking the edible bits from our starters we waited for our main courses.... And waited.... And after 25 mins of waiting we decided enough was enough and we would leave- we went to the bar and said we'd pay for the drinks and starters, despite how disgusting it all was (the wine was also very poor) - we were spoken to extremely rudely and told we had only waited 20 minutes... Not the response we had expected... The man was so rude and pretty much chucked our receipt at us- I told my husband to check it- good job he did... We had been charged for a main course and service!!! He then went on the till (which I was sure he would break as he was hitting it so hard with his pen) altered the bill and threw yet another receipt at us... No apology, nothing... We were so let down, not to mention starving after sitting in there for an hour and 20 mins! most definetly will not be coming back here!

I eat here quite a lot as the food and service is always consistently good. I would also say definitely value for money. My friend who I dined with also enjoyed it and said that he would definitely come again and recommend it to others.

We thought we would visit F&G again after a long lay off. Have had mixed feelings about this restaurant in the past but wanted to try it again as we were in the area. As an aside the South Croydon strip is awash with eateries, clubs and pubs and competition is fierce. Well, there were ladders outside today, 21st June, and the old F&G is being rebadged as Brasserie Vacherin. Lunch was very pleasant with the a la carte menu seemingly stripped of many of its fishy dishes. The Prix Fixe menu offers good value at £10.95 for 2 courses, £15.95 for 3. We both opted for Gazpacho to start, one from the prix fixe and one from the a la Carte. the only difference was in the additional ingredients, one with basil and one with broad beans. The soup was so good it really didn't need the addition of odd ingredients. Mains consisted of Palourde clams from the a la carte and merguez sausages from the prix fixe. Both were excellent and, without any additional sides were ample for lunch. Special mention for the bread and anchovy butter which is remembered fondly from Le Cassoulet. Outcome was two happy punters having a nice relaxed lunch with attentive but restrained service with the bill coming in at around £50. Go again - yes.
Drinks were reasonably priced with the prosecco a steal.
