“Very scenic country style hotel”
Reviewed June 27, 2010

I've stayed here many times and recommend it as the best 3 star hotel in the area. The rooms are excellent, especially the garden suites and they also have some special rooms. All rooms are large by UK standards. The lake nearby and surrounding countryside is excellent for walks/runs and swimming in the lake. The hotel has the smallest swimming pool I've ever seen and a good sized Gym though it could do with an update. The food is a little variable but reasonable value, drinks are pricy (as in most hotels). Staff have always been helpful and friendly. If you want night life or even a pub in walking distance this is not the place fro you - though this makes the hotel quiet at night.

My husband and I recently stayed in the area of this hotel, we drove by and commented how lovely the hotel looked and later that day phoned to see if they were open to non-residents for dinner. We booked for 8pm that evening. When we got there the waier/barman didn't really seem to understand the fact that we had a table booked and we weren't asked if we would like a drink etc, eventually he came back with two menus. After about 10mins we walked up to the restaurant and were seated at a table window, the view was lovely and at this point we were looking forward to our dinner.
We both ordered roast duck breast with seasonal veg and a jus of some sort, this arrived quite quickly, the duck was quite acceptable as was the jus but the veg which were in separate dishes was so bland, boiled potatoes, boiled parnips, carrots you get the picture! To round this off after lifting one of my boiled potatoes out of the dish I found what I can only describe as a piece of chewed meat, urgghhhh! I had almost finished anyway so when the waitress came I pointed it out to her, I'll tell the chef she said.
We then ordered sweets, chocloate torte, which I expected to be a thin layer of sponge with a cholocate mousse sort of thing on top, what was served was actually a cold tart case with what seemed like melted chocolate in??? My husband opted for treacle tart with ice cream, we actually laughed at this there was no treacle in sight and the tart crumbled like bread crumbs!
I heard nothing else about the chewed meat in the veg dish and when we said about the "torte" the waiter said "sorry but my english is not good and when I wrote the menu out earlier the chef wasn't here and I didn't know how to spell tart"
We wont' be rushing back!

We joined relatives for dinner at this hotel. The food was the worst we've had in a long time. It took an hour to serve the first course and when we asked for bread we were told it was in the oven. Most of the food was tasteless - tough chicken, beef like old boots and a revolting looking lamb shank. I'm sure the sauce with my salmon was warmed up tomato ketchup. Our relatives said the cooked breakfast was inedible. The hotel is tired and outdated. The 'upgraded' rooms in the white 'chalets' at the back had the curtains hanging off the poles. All in all very disappointing for a hotel which is in such a beautiful location.

From entering the hotel to leaving it the staff were very helpful and friendly.
The rooms were clean, plenty of tea, coffee and hot chocolate. Access to the internet was quick and easy to do.

Food was excellant, a good variety of choice, staff very friendly and helpful, Gave good advice on wine selection and food.

Definatly going again.

The place needs updating urgently!!!!!!!!! don't go there. We had a recently refurbished premier room which was outside, it was like a prefabricated building. The air-con was noisy and not very controllable, the television reception was poor. The mugs were the smoked glass pyrex something you would associate with a cheap cafe. There was on;ly one bath towel no hand soap, pubic hair on the bathroom floor and a sticky mess on the floor by the hand basin which we worked out was shower gel, because there wasn't a bar of hand soap everytime you needed to wash your hands you had to open a travel size bottle of shower gel and squeeze it out to use. We were the only people 4 dinner and breakfast it was empty. Not value for money, very disappointed as we have been to other best westerns and they had been fine.

We were concerned to learn of the problems during your stay. The leisure club has been upgraded and teh hsowers repaired. The jacuzzi is a hot tub. We have now installed 32in flatscreen tv's with freeview and upgraded the aerial system.I would like to welcome you back and put right our wrongs.

We ended up staying here as our original hotel had 'forgotten' that we needed an adapted room. So initially we felt relieved that this was somewhere to stay but it went downhill rapidly, the beds in the adapted room were falling apart and the grab rail by the toilet was set at the height for a seven foot tall person in high heels.
The breakfast was the only acceptable thing and whilst our charges were waived I was encouraged to post this review to advise others

Stayed for New Years Eve. Originally offered a Garden Suite Room. There was nothing wrong with it, other than it was outside the main hotel, and just didn't appeal. We asked the reception staff if there was any chance of changing to a room within the main building. They were amazing and showed us two alternative rooms. The room was comfortable, clean and exactly what I would expect from a hotel of this grade. The food was excellent, but what made our stay so special was the fantastic team which run this hotel.
