“Overnight stay”
Reviewed March 31, 2013

We stayed here overnight, prior to going on holiday.
Staff were friendly for the most part. The room was very small with only a window in the ceiling.
The buffet was not very good. Cold and overcooked. We paid for 3 courses, but the third was a limp piece of chocolate cake that we didn't bother with.
Breakfast was £9.95 adequate but not worth the money. There was no atmosphere in the bar and my husband was bored and consequently grumpy. There is a pub within driving distance but we were tired and did not want to do anymore driving.

We arrived at a reasonable time. Was charged an extra £2 to pay on debit card! No signs anywhere stating this. Was queried. Was told had fallen down! Given key to room. Room to be fair was 'ok' needed a lot doing to it. Went to eat the £12.50 buffet meal. Paid cash!! Starter of soup was ok. Waited 5 mins for the 'chef' to arrive and cut the tiniest bit of cold meat and cold Yorkshire pud. Veg had been cooking since the previous night. 2 bits of dessert left. Was told not getting anymore out due to the time. It was 20:45! The dining area was very dirty. Vents was disgusting. Hole in the ceiling. Carpets ripped/torn very very shoddy. Staff could wait to get you out and set up for breakfast. Which to be frank may have been cooking at that time! Did not feel welcome at all. Felt as though we was 'putting them out' by just being there. Sleep was ok. Shower yelp was ok. No power to the water though. Glad to leave that morning. But car was ok when we returned and they had put bulbs in the lights outside by the time we had returned. I have informed he hotel of my visit. Still awaiting response!

Avoid this hotel at all costs; parking is a nightmare, the customer service is disgusting (actually some of the staff were helpful but their service was overshadowed by the ones that weren't) and the rooms - well that's a whole 'nother thing. Couldn't get any BBC on the very aged TV, the room was cold, the mattress thin and a little lumpy, and the fuse blew in my room no less than SIX times in less than 12 hours.

I didn't eat there but I can't say I'm sorry about that.

They also have no clue as to where they actually are - their address says Rectory Lane but they are actually several miles further away on Russ Hill (apparently the fact that Rectory Lane becomes Russ Hill makes it all okay).

I'm not surprised Lastminute.com makes them a secret destination - if they told you which hotel it was you wouldn't make the booking!

Room Tip: DON'T get room 401 - that's the one the fuses blow every few minutes.

Having recently stayed at the Russ Hill, I felt it necessary to write a review to inform how disappointed we were.

We checked in late on Thursday 14th March and we were allocated a room right by reception, to say the least we didn't get much sleep as the door outside was opening/closing and people were very loud going to their rooms. The room itself was awful, the hairdryer didn't work, the shower dripped constantly and there was no lock on the bathroom door. On checking out I mentioned it to a member of the hotel staff on reception, they apologised but to be honest was more interested in serving the next customer.

Avoid unless the hotel improves but to be honest there are better hotels at similar prices.

On a plus note we did Maple Manor Meet & Greet..excellent would recommend!

Room Tip: Avoid room near reception you won't get any sleep!

First of all I must stress that I am never one to write a review or complain but now is the time! Positives are tough but the food was ok (steak) and the guy running the bar quite friendly. The room I had was a family room and the coldest I have ever stayed in. I mentioned this to reception when leaving early (5am) and was told its always cold and I should have requested a heater?? Brilliant. I stayed in a twin room returning from a long time travelling and just wanted a bit of sleep and a shower. The room was the smallest twin room ever with uncomfortable beds. The time was 7am and the chance of sleep zero! Maids were constantly hoovering outside (I appreciate it's there job) but bizarrely knocked on my door 3 times despite having a 'do not disturb' sign outside?? This with the guys next door playing rap music and singing meant zero sleep. The bathroom was filthy and the shower had terrible water pressure. Thus decided to leave early. Went to have a chat with the young chap on reception but he didn't acknowledge me at all, took keys without even looking at me (do staff not talk to customers anymore?? I would be out of a job) and continued to chat up and joke with a cleaner. I am so pleased I never need to return again. Genuinely I have stayed in youth hostels with better staff and levels of comfort.

We were concerned at the number of poor reviews on this hotel we were very glad to have don't it at Lastminute.com and it being one of their "secret hotels" That is, you don't know the name of the hotel until you actually book, a fairly full description is give, and then pay significantly less than the asking price. .. As in, we paid £22:25 for the 2 of us in a nice cosy room and had some very good food at a reasonable price (*:50 for a superbly cooked 8oz. steak.
Yes, the hotel has seen better days but it was more than adequate for a spontaneous one night away. Staff were friendly and efficient, bar prices OK - but beware, cards incur a £2 surcharge.
The only down side was that it was quite cold in the public areas, but there again, it did snow!!
Would definitely go back!

off-season you can pick up a double en-suite room for under 25 quid. thats SERIOUS value for money! here's what i read in other reviews.. 'the car park was 3 miles away' no it isn't, i have never had to walk more than 100 yards from car to hotel even during high season. this time of year (March) there is always a space directly opposite the entrance 20 yards away. there is a bar and carvery restaurant on site. 12.95 for a 3 course carvery meal is good value although the breakfast AT 12.95 IS A WEE BIT STEEP. IN THE VILLAGE (1 MILE AWAY) there are 3 pubs one of which doubles as an indian restaurant and has big screen TV. the rooms are clean but a bit 'tired' but rewind here ... TWENTY-FIVE POUNDS! heres another comment 'The place is in need of a total renovation- chipped and scuffed doors, peeling wallpaper, a hole in the dining room ceiling and a general run-down appearance' aww, here's a great tip for those who want somewhere to stay overnight and think these details will completely ruin their cut-price package holiday to Benidorm, PAY MORE AND STAY ELSEWHERE! it really gets my goat when people search the likes of lastminute.com for the cheapest possible place to stay then whine because they didnt get 5 star treatment. if you are a smoker there are 4 (i think) smoking rooms available, ask at reception. when i stay at the Russ (frequently) its after a long day working and the bonus of the smoking rooms (apart from being able to smoke without hanging your head out of the window) is that these rooms have a bath as well as a shower, loverleyyyyy! rooms have a small TV and mobile phone reception seems fine. shuttle bus to airport and long term parking available for holidaymakers too. all in all this hotel is awesome value for money but don't expect champagne quality for lemonade money......
