Reviewed February 18, 2013

We stayed here for one night to get an early flight the next morning and use the parking for 4 days. All of this for 2 of us cost £50,00. So what was i expecting when we arrived?? Not much! The rooms are small, clean enough and met with my expectations.

Just remember, i paid £50,00 for 1 night with 4 days parking, this is only £5,00 more than 4 days at the long term carpark at Gatwick itself so if its a luxury hotel you are looking for then stop reading this, don't be such a cheapskate and look elsewhere as you wont find it here as you oly get what you pay for. So with this in mind, this place was a bargain.

Included in the price, we had a free pick up and drop off to the airport terminal.

My review and the 4 stars are based on the cost vs the quality.

Room Tip: Not sure here as was only there 1 night.

This was booked for us by TC travel agents as we were flying out morning from gatwick and did not want to risk M25.Vey hard to find in the dark is fair way out from airport narrow windy roads. The staff were very helpfull,we had a meal in the restaurant, three course carvery about £12.50 each i think it was, Food very good. went to bed had the worst nights sleep ever, bed not cumfy cramped room walls thin noisy toilets all night .
I would not stay here again as cheap as it was, you only get what you pay for as they say !!

Good Points -

(i) Parking was easy in front of the hotel. NB In the dark, don't move forward too far! We parked next to a car which was bogged down in the soft ground just off the parking.

(ii) Staff where friendly and helpful, our car was booked into an Air Parks car park rather than their on-site car park and we were given clear printed instructions on how to get to that car park for the following morning.

(iii) The room was on the ground floor and in easy reach of the Dining Room and Bar

(iv) The room was clean with modern en-suite bathroom. Furniture was functional, we didn't use the tv.

(v) The Buffet meal (3-courses) in our deal was very adequate with some choices and the small restaurant and separate bar were functional but perfectly OK.

(vi) Free wi-fi in public parts of the hotel which I did use in the morning and it worked Ok..

Bad Points

(i) Mobile reception is generally poor and non-existent in our room. Often poor in the general area outside the hotel.

(ii) As others have mentioned, not all the rooms have windows. Ours didn't but this was not a problem for us as it was going to be dark for our entire stay.

(iii) Bedrooms however with no windows have a constant air-con system which cannot be switched off. My wife checked with reception in the middle of the night and was told that this is due to HSE reasons. The background noise can make sleeping difficult.

(iv) The corridor carpets have metal ridges in them which is unhelpful because of course people travelling with wheeled hand luggage will roll along them making "ku-thunk ku-thunk" noises.

(v) The bed in our room was fairly uncomfortable.

(vi) The hotel is out in the country, check on Google and StreetView beforehand because is not particularly easy to find.

Breakfast - We were leaving very early and did not eat breakfast at the hotel.

Overall then I would say that the hotel is adequate and more suited as a choice for travellers arriving in the evening and travelling off via Gatwick. It is reasonably good value for the combined deal on buffet, overnight stay and parking.

If we travelled via Gatwick again we would consider it but perhaps go for a room which has a window so that the air-con could be controlled (i.e. switched off).

Room Tip: Request a room with a window to avoid constant air-con noise.

This is the second time we have stayed at Russ Hill. Both times we have been pleased with our room, as were another couple we were travelling with. Our rooms and bathrooms were clean and nicely furnished and the beds were comfortable. Last time we parked at the airport, this time we left our car at the hotel. The bus only runs hourly for most of the time - and on our return we just missed the 10.40 am one by 4 minutes, so had a lengthy wait for the next one at 11.40. So another time might park at the airport. The people on reception were very helpful and gave us change for the bus ticket machine. We had thought about driving into Horley to eat, but as the hotel is a drive away, through country lanes, we ate at the hotel and the food in the carvery was good v.f.m. The bar meals looked good too.

The only down sides - are the noise from adjacent rooms, we had a closed off connecting door and could hear almost everything from the people in that room, plus the noise of people coming and going along the corridors can disturb your sleep if you have planned an early night! My son and his wife and family were given a room on the main corridor, which was also very noisy with people coming back from the bar and restaurant area. So unfortunately they didn't get any sleep at all and had to be up at 3.30 am for their flight - they won't stay there again. (Room organiser - wouldn't it make sense to put families in rooms away from the main routes?)

I would stay definitely stay here again, but ask for a room away from the hustle and bustle! It is amazing value for money, and cannot understand why people want absolute perfection at such a low cost.

Room Tip: Probably a room in what I think is the annexe, but there are a lot of corridors to find your way thr...

Positives:
1. Customer service is good. They would listen to you and make you feel listened. They try to accommodate your needs. I am not sure if this could be the same with everyone, but for me it was good as I think I had booked the hotel for 4 days. One of the managers (Sam) I would like to say that he was very good.
2. Good breakfast but very expensive (£9.50 for adult, and approximately £4.50 for child)
3. Good bar
4. Internet (WiFi) only in the public areas. Some rooms may get the WiFi but not guaranteed.
5. I did not use the bus services to Gatwick airport but It looked like it was good and there were several customers.

Negatives:
1. If you get rooms bit interior then you wouldn't get your mobile signals. If you are Three customer then please forget about using your phone unless you come out to the public lounge or out of the hotel. If you are lucky then you may get some signal in the upstairs room.
2. some rooms are good and some rooms are not very clean. (I had to change my room because I did not have the phone signal in the room I was initially provided with).
3. The first room I was given did not have windows and it felt like I was in a jail.
4. The second room had window but unfortunately the window was not secure. As anyone could easily slide the windows and get inside the room.
5. Last day of my stay there was no electricity from 10am to 3pm and we were not informed about this at all. I was not at all happy with this.

Overall, I am inclined to visit again to this hotel but if I experience any more negative experiences again then I probably would not visit in the future. I have to say this that unfortunately I wouldn't recommend this hotel for couple for a romantic treat or any relaxing break or family holidays or city breaks.
This hotel is probably suitable for customers who stay for Gatwick airport visitors.

we used this hotel when flying from gatwick, we bokked with holiday extras and it was great value for money, however we had problems finding it (with sat nav) as it is out in the country lanes, when we went out for food at night it was a long drive through country lanes.
the hotel however is good valu with stay and park deals, and a bus does pick you up to take you the airport, and picks you up.at a cost of £5 return.

No complaints at all. This hotel is ideal if you wish to leave your car at the same hotel. Staff were friendly and efficient and explained everything to us both and the shuttle bus was fine. We had a nice large room on the ground floor for disabled and we also had windows. On the whole good value for money and perfectly adequate for one night. The food was perfectly adequate as well. We would have no hesitation in using this place again if needed.

Room Tip: Ask for the large disabled rooms on ground floor.
