I don't think I have ever encountered such rude, discourteous staff in my life before. We walked out after the starter because the staff were so unbelieveably rude. I couldn't eat my lunch as I just wanted to cry. I don't understand why these people are working in a customer service industry. They would not have been out of place in an episode of Fawlty Towers, were it not for the lack of humour.

We discovered the Spotgate Inn via a review in the Express & Star a couple of years ago, and as is often the case it was put on the to visit list. Finally in December 2010 we got to visit it. From the road it looks like a nice country pub, but who would know what a fantastic hidden secret is inside. You walk in and see a nice restaurant and some cosy snug areas to have your pre meal drinks. You are then led up a set of steps and depending on whether you go to the left or right you with end up in 1st class or 3rd class pullman dining carriage. If you have to choose which carriage to eat in this is hard as they are both lovely with extremely comfortable seats, steam train sounds are played in the background to make you sound like you are on a train journey and they have also created a platform aswell. We have been back several times for special birthday occasions for our parents who find the carriages such a surprise at being there and the look on their faces is fantastic.

Now the food, there is a lovely range of starters, mains and desserts the prices are extremely reasonable for the surroundings and the staff are always friendly.

Full steam ahead for these hidden gem, you must buy your ticket!!!

If you wish to eat in the carriage advance booking is strongly recommended to avoid disappointment.

The setting is just wonderful, a Pullman first class carriage, high wing back chairs, no body can encroach on your space, lovely and warm on a winters evening, stair out the window onto a station platform, just a wonderful
Took the wife for Wedding anniversary and thoroughly enjoyed it so booked it for a Xmas Fayre meal for all the staff from the office and it was lovely, this time in the non first class carriage which was equally lovelly and again chairs that were great and nobody could bang know or encroach on our little bit of space.
Now the food, fabulous, well impressed and the menu was a flexible to accomadate inviduals with special requirements (ie mother in law is a vegetarian and they cooked the monk fish without the meat special) the fixed xmas menu was also flexible enough to provide everyone with the choices they wanted including items not on the specific menu, they really made our evening special with the food, the setting and the service, well worth more than just a visit, tell your friends too.
They do bookings and walk ins, lunch and eveing meal too and sunday lunch
A interesting, quirky and quality place to eat.
Enjoy

On holiday in the area for Christmas we booked for a party of 12 to eat in one of the railway carriages. What a wonderful experience it was! Service and food was excellent. Enjoyed by us all and would definitely come again when in the area. A real experience and brought back lots of memories of the old trains we used to travel in.
